Animax-Asia… Dubbed in English – Episode 7:

By bluemist on September 1st, 2005

September 1, 2005

The unthinkable may happen.Come October 2005, Animax-Asia is introducing Filipino dubs! Yep, you heard it right.Filipino is the national language of our country. Anime on local television is normally shown with Filipino dubs, obviously, removing the original Japanese voices and replacing them such that the program can be accessible to the masses. You can say that our reaction to this kind of activity is very similar to how U.S. handles anime. Some anime get good dubs, others get poor dubs. Generally, Filipino dubs are rather well accepted.
Anime is getting more and more popular in this side of the world, to the point that Animax-Asia was launched in 2004 as the first 24-hour cable anime channel in Asia. Well, we all know the story afterwards. Subtitled anime become dubs, some non-anime programs surface, and a lot more programming quirks left the fans complaining all the time. And now, their new trick up their sleeve to garner bigger audience (or rather, prevent losing audience because of Hero TV, more on that later) is introducing Filipino dubs to their ever growing multi-language anime lineup!
Again, Animax-Asia has a separate Philippine feed exclusively for Philippine viewers, and that’s how Animax just loves us. I tend to think that we are their biggest audience (read: source of income) in Southeast Asia because of the immense popularity of anime in our country. This move by Animax seems to cater to the masses, getting more audience classes (as per their ‘anime for everyone’ slogan) and cultural divides. At the same time, this seems to be an pre-emptive move to compete with Hero TV, the all-Filipino cable animation channel that will be fully launched this October. This upcoming channel is reportedly gaining ground, maybe because Naruto is in the lineup. More importantly though, anime fans will have even more choices. We already have Cartoon Network and Animax-Asia, now with Hero, anime has just become so widespread, you can’t deny it anymore.
You’ve been waiting for the catch, so here it is. I’ve been complaining for almost seven episodes about Animax-Asia’s English dubbing, right? Animax-Asia’s Filipino dubbing now opens a new debate and divide. Purists who want their subs have another reason to complain, because Filipino dubs will eat airtime further, having fears of having less subtitled anime yet again. Evidence of this seems to surface even nowadays because the 6:00PM Saiyuki Reload timeslot is now in English dub (it used to be subbed before). Here’s a bigger news. The first anime premiere that will feature the Filipino dubbing is… be surprised, Initial D Fourth Stage! Nope, they did not show any Initial D prior to this. That alone is an outrage, isn’t it?

imageimage

Recently news about some of the local voice cast of Initial D Fourth Stage have been introduced. Takumi Fujiwara will be voiced by Matteo Guidicelli, a young and popular kart driver over here. Kyoko Iwase will be voiced by Angel Locsin, a beautiful and very popular actress, widely known for the Darna live action series (Darna is our equivalent of Wonder Woman). She says that she likes the PS2 Gran Turismo games, and so she’s kinda hyped up to voice Kyoko I guess… Let me tell you that it’s kinda rare that news like this surface over TV and newspapers, let alone anime news. I guess Animax-Asia is heavily hyping their one-of-a-kind move.
As I said, this becomes a new dynamic in this ever-ongoing anime debate. Even now, fans may be just oh so furious that Animax-Asia has just become trilingual (Japanese, English, Filipino). As debates go on, I’m just here monitoring in the sidelines. I don’t watch Animax-Asia anymore, for various reasons, but once in a while I tune in for a random anime episode treat or two. Whether a dubbed or subbed episode, I don’t care anymore, as long as it doesn’t annoy me too much. Come October, which will premiere Initial D Fourth Stage, I’ll definitely watch and find out how good is their first Filipino dub offering.

Villar welcomes endorsement by labor groups

Senate President Manny Villar welcomed the endorsement made by the Associated Labor Unions and Trade Union Congress of the Philippines (ALU-TUCP) of his reelection bid.
The biggest labor organization in the country threw its support behind the Senate President who is seeking reelection as an independent guest candidate of the Genuine Opposition.
"I am honored by the support given by ALU- TUCP which represents our country's thousands of workers who stir our industries to growth through their expertise and skills," Villar said.
"ALU-TUCP plays a significant role not only in protecting our human resource assets but also in further professionalizing our workforce to make them at par with their counterparts abroad."
Villar said that as enshrined in the Constitution, the government must afford full protection to labor, whether organized or unorganized, and promote full employment and equality of opportunity for workers.
Along with Villar, the labor group also endorsed senatorial candidates Luis "Chavit" Singson, Loren Legarda, and Michael Defensor.
Angel Locsin describes Koko Pimentel as 'model for the youth'
"A model for the youth who should be emulated."
This was how Angel Locsin, one of the country's young stars, described Aquilino Pimentel III whose candidacy for the Senate she endorsed.
Locsin, who comes from Bulacan, rose to prominence when she became one of the lead stars in the fantasy-themed television series "Mulawin" in 2004. She starred as the super heroine "Darna" in the TV adaptation of the popular Mars Ravelo comics hit and is now the leading female star in the television series "Asian Treasures."

*KText is available to Philippine residents only. P2.50/SMS for Smart, Talk N Text, Globe, and Touch mobile subscribers. P2.00/SMS for Sun Cellular subscribers. P5.00/MMS to all networks.

Angel Locsin’s formula for great bikini line

<><><><><><><><><><><><><>It costs more than the usual salon techniques of waxing and threading. The price depends on body area covered, and it takes six to eight sessions to see full results<><>
Locsin, a magazine cover girl, says its all worth it.Ive tried lotion [depilatories], waxing, threading. But with cream and lotion, ?kapag mali ang gamit, puwedeng masunog ang skin, tapos amoy pangkulot! [wrong use can burn the skin, and it smells of hair-curling chemical], she says, laughing
MANILA, Philippines TV soap star Angel Locsin says shes pretty low-maintenance, but is particular about one thing stubbles. I have a simple beauty regimen. I make sure I thoroughly clean my face, remove all traces of makeup and moisturize. I get body scrubs and massages with my therapist kasi gusto ko may kausap ako, ayoko nang matagal na treatments kasi nakakaiinip? [I want to have someone to talk with, I dont like long treatments because theyre a long wait], she says. But I make sure I am hair-free in the right places.?
Locsin has just been named endorser of Facial Care Centers (FCC) LaserLight hair removal, a diode laser system that removes unwanted hair.
How it works: LaserLight penetrates the dermis and disables hair follicles, thus preventing hair growth, resulting in smooth, even skin.

And usually, late ka na [you end up late for something] because you must let it stay on your skin longer.

Locsin has many endorsements. Shes on billboards promoting a variety of stuff, from swim wear to whitening capsules. All this exposure requires her to look good and be fashionable.

Not having unsightly hair and stubble is important in my work. It gives me confidence, makes me smile with ease, makes me feel sexy. Hindi ako naiilang mag-sleeveless or magsuot ng short dresses [I dont feel timid to go sleeveless or to wear short dresses], she says, looking polished in a sweetheart-neckline cocktail dress in earth tones and sky-high strappy gladiator heels.

Reduction, not removal

A clarification: LaserLight is a hair-reduction, not hair-removal method.
There is no technology yet to fully eradicate the hair in your body, because as long as youre alive, you?ll grow hair, says Dr. Shirley Samson-Valdez, FCC cosmetic and pathologic dermatologist. With LaserLight, the hair that has been removed may or may not grow back, but regrowth will be less and a lot finer, depending on your hair cycle.

Locsin initially feared the treatment would be painful and time-consuming. She found out it was quick, surprisingly painless and has no downtime. She had it done on her underarms, legs and bikini line.

Waxing and shaving cause skin darkening, says Dr. Valdez. With LaserLight, there is less abrasion and rubbing so skin eventually becomes smoother and fairer. There are no scars or razor burns, pimple-like bumps with pus, ingrown hair and chicken skin.

Not just for girls

Even men have had LaserLight done on them.
Men have their facial hair removed  mustache and beard  because they don?t want the hassles of shaving. Those who are really hairy have their chest and backs treated, says Dr. Valdez.

Locsin advises those who want great skin, especially in the summer, to be bikini-ready and try out laser hair reduction.

Summer always sizzles with energy. This season, ABS-CBN’s Station ID shows how such vigor can be used to help make the country a better place. In the colorful music video, stars and news and current affairs personalities will be seen building homes for the poor, cleaning a river and the sea, sweeping streets, feeding children, among many other community activities.

They will also be dancing to a lively song performed by the ASAP ‘09 Kanto Boys Billy Crawford, John Lloyd Cruz, Luis Manzano and Vhong Navarro. The song, written by Robert Labayen and Peewee Gonzales with music by Star Records’ Christian Martinez, is about “spreading love and care everyday and everywhere.”

ABS-CBN chose the socially relevant theme recognizing the hard times brought about by the global recession. The creators of the summer station ID believe that the scarcity of material wealth can be overcome by an abundance of generosity and concern for one another. That is also why the company’s TV channel is using the battle cry “Kayang-Kaya Natin, Kapamilya” for the whole year.

Guided by the unchanging motto “In the Service of the Filipino Worldwide,” ABS-CBN has always been engaged in a lot of public service programs. Last year, ABS-CBN launched Bayanijuan as its banner project tying together all of the company’s work in protecting the rights and welfare of children, saving the environment, providing educational tools, rebuilding disaster-hit communities and empowering the poor through sustainable livelihood programs. All of these projects are done with the help of donors, partners and volunteers from both the government and private sectors.

The summer station ID was created by ABS-CBN’s Creative Communications Management Team. The project was led by Johnny de los Santos, Danie Sedilla-Cruz, Edsel Misenas, Kathrina Sanchez and Dang Baldonado. It is directed by Paolo Ramos and Peewee Gonzales. Other members are Jimmy Porca, Project Coordinator; Wowie Hao, Cinematographer; Sam Esquillon, Production Designer; Rap Dela Rea, Editor; Maribeth Bichara, Choreographer; Rosalie David, Caster; Marvin Bragas, Location manager.

Don’t miss ABS-CBN’s summer station ID launch on ASAP ’09 this Sunday (March 22) and see how moving in unison this summer can be fun and fruitful.
