Encantadia

Encantadia is a Filipino fantasy television series (locally known as telefantasya) produced by GMA Network. It was dubbed as the grandest, most ambitious, and most expensive production for Philippine television. The series garnered both popular and critical recognition at home and abroad, including winning the 2005 Teleserye (Television Series) of the Year at the Los Angeles-based Gawad Amerika Awards. The pilot episode was aired on May 2, 2005. Its last episode was aired on December 9 of the same year to give way to its second book, Etheria. This series aired its pilot episode on December 12, and its last episode on February 18, 2006. The third and latest installment of the Encantadia saga, entitled Encantadia: Pag-ibig Hanggang Wakas, aired its pilot on February 20, 2006.

Encantadia can be considered a spin-off of Mulawin, another successful GMA telefantasya wherein the Diwatas of Lireo first appeared as allies of the Mulawins. However, it seems that the timelines between the two shows do not connect together even though they share some characters and some story elements. The writer mentioned that Encantadia has its own story and is not related to the storyline of the Mulawin TV series.

Encantadia was first mentioned in Mulawin as a separate dimension where the encantados (enchanted beings) and diwatas live. In Mulawin, only few Encantadians were introduced and the whole world of Encantadia was not yet known but in this television series, the world of the Encantadia was expanded into four kingdoms and several new creatures and characters were introduced. Also, in Mulawin, it appears that only Diwatas can create a portal between Encantadia and the human world but in this series the Tree of Asnamon serves as a portal between the two worlds to anyone who holds the magical medallion.

Introduction

Encantadia is a term coined from the Filipino word encantada or encantado (which was in turn derived from the Spanish term) which means enchanted beings endowed with supernatural powers.

In the show, Encantadia is a vast enchanted realm comprising of four divided kingdoms where different mythical entities thrive. These four kingdoms bear the four precious stones that holds the land's balance. The kingdom of Adamya, Sapiro, Lireo, and Hathoria. The tranquility and future of Encantadia rests on the four gemstones of water, earth, air and fire; each being carefully kept by the bearers from each kingdom.

But when the Hathors, from the kingdom of Hathoria threatened to accumulate all the gems from the other bearers, hostility and war swept over the realm. It is a battle of three kingdoms against one.

The story unfolds in Lireo, the kingdom where Ynang Reyna Mine-a lives with her daughters Amihan, Alena, Danaya, and Pirena. The four Sangg'res are tasked to be the new keepers of the gemstones. Their skills in war and their powers as the royalty of the diwatas are believed to be the strength of Lireo. As long as the gemstones are kept properly, the balance of nature in Encantadia remains. But this story tells viewers that powers can also break precious relationships as Pirena had plotted the downfall of her own sister Amihan, who won the competition for the Lirean crown, and the other Sangg'res Danaya and Alena took Amihan's side.
With this situation, Lira, the long lost daughter of Amihan returned to Encantadia and tried to fulfill her mission of mending the broken relationships of the strong-willed gemstone keepers.

The main protagonists

The story revolves around the four Sang'gres of Lireo, the center of worship in Encantadia - Amihan, Alena, Danaya and Pirena. Amihan, the enthroned Queen of Lireo is the keeper of Jewel of Air and the mother of Lira whom she had born to Ybarro, also known as Prince Ybrahim, the heir to the fallen kingdom of Sapiro. Amihan sits in the throne of Lireo as queen with the wisdom and kindness of her mother and the skills of swordsmanship and strong arms of her father Raquim. Alena is the third among the four daughters of Queen Mine-a and the keeper of the Jewel of Water. Alena is also the lover of Ybarro and mother of Kahlil. Pirena, the eldest among the Sang'gres, keeps the Jewel of Fire and had used it to defeat her mother, Queen Mine-a, who have favored Amihan to wear the crown in her place but she will realize that she's very special and finds the love remaining inside deep in her heart. She is the smartest and most skillful among the Sang'gres. Danaya is the fearless and most lawful among the Sang'gres. She possesses the Jewel of Earth and receives the care and affection of Aquil, the chief of the Lirean soldiers. Because of Pirena's anger toward Amihan, she replaced baby Lira with her own daughter Mira and had left the former in a dirty place in the world of the human beings. There she grew up and fell in love with a rich youth named Anthony, whom Mira also fell in love with. But Lira has a higher calling as a Sang'gre. She is hailed by Mine-a as the savior of Encantadia. Her goal is to reunite the four Sang'gres who have, at the course of the story, hated each other because of situations willed by Bathala. Like the history of Encantadia itself, the four Sangg'gres also have a similar story because Pirena symbolizes Hathoria which is the enemy of the other three sisters of earth, air and water. But as the story goes by, Amihan, Alena and Danaya realize that their love for their evil sister still remains strong and realize that she was never the enemy but the Hathors.

Kingdoms

Lireo

The land of the Diwatas is the Kingdom of Lireo, bounded on the east. The wise, strong, brave and powerful Cassiopea was the first ruler and founder of Lireo. Cassiopea helped, rather eluctantly with using the Jewel, at the extinction of Etheria and later became a member representing Lireo at the Council of Encantadia. At the start of the series, the ruler was Mine-a who was succeeded by her daughter Amihan. The ruler of Lireo carries either the title of Reyna or Ynang Reyna if she is already with sons/daughters. This kingdom is the keeper of the Jewel of Air. Lireo had 10 Queens during the series.

Lireo is considered the most progressive among the kingdoms. Their kingdom is obviously powered by a large windmill. They have the tallest towers and also seem to have cable cars in the palace. Their armies are the only ones who have Sasakyang Panghimpapawid (Airships).

Their most powerful weapon of war is the Katapulto (fire catapult).

Sapiro

On the North of Encantadia is the Kingdom of Sapiro. The land of valiant, shrewd and cunning warriors, the Sapirians. At the start of the series, this vast kingdom was under the rule of King Armeo, his wife and queen Mayne, and his future heir Prince Ybrahim (also named Ybarro). This kingdom is the original keeper of the Jewel of Earth, the land blessed with precious metals and stones and its soil fertile enough for crops to grow. This also is the kingdom from where Prince Raquim, King Armeo's cousin and Amihan's father, hails from. It is also the kingdom that rescued the Adamians from the clutches of the Hathors during the time of their conquest. In that conquest, the Hathors got hold of two of the jewels and used this advantage to defeat the Sapirians who had but one gemstone. The whole kingdom was destroyed in that battle. King Armeo was also killed later in the fight with King Arvak, the Hathorian king at that time and the father of the present king Hagorn. But Arvak was killed by Prince Raquim, regained the gemstones and gave it to Queen Mine-a of Lireo for safeskeeping. Armeo's father, King Meno, helped the extinction of Etheria and became a member of the Council of Encantadia. So far, there are only two known surviving Sapirians from the Royal House: Ybrahim, the next heir to the throne, and Asval, a strange and mysterious warrior (whose real loyalties are uncertain and turned out to be a traitor) who was always with his two accomplices Bandok and Axilom.

The Sapirians are closely similar to the Diwatas, they can also teleport themselves to another place and shoot out blast bolts from their hands. However, they are more hostile, more cunning and shrewder than the denizens of Lireo. They have the ability to heal themself or others of a disease or any kinds of wounds. In contrast to Lirean royalty, Sapirian royalty is very much akin to the traditional patriarchal definition of an absolute monarchy. This means the eldest son of the king is next in line to rule the mystical kingdom. The Sapirian king is allowed to love whoever he wants to love and choose his wife but the difference from the Diwatas is that their race is dominated by men.

The Sapirians are best known for their unmatched skills in swordsmanship and archery. They are also proficient in hand-to-hand combat. Sapirians also have incredible strength, which they draw all their powers from. They are very shrewd and cunning, making them great allies and very dangerous enemies in battle, but despite these abilities Sapirians are friendly and kind-hearted.

The Sapirians are also involved in the founding of the kingdom of Lireo. The land where Lireo stands was once a forest where Prince Raquim brought the Diwatas to hide under Evades' protection during Queen Avria's great purge against the Diwatas. It was here that they found refuge and peace. Cassiopeia declared it Lireo. Until the war that brought down Etheria, Lireo flourished as a powerful kingdom next to Sapiro.
There are four tribes on Sapiro:
  1. Adjantao : the land of the nomads
  2. Ascano : the land of the Barbaros
  3. Yudo-o : not much is known, but Rosas from Book 3 is said to be the last of her tribe.
  4. Arnon : the tribe of Azulan (book 3), a mortal who fell in love with Amihan disguised as a powerful prince, the twin warriors Luntian and Violeta and the Adamian Dilawan.
Sapirians would be later revealed as miners. This would explain the riches they have hidden underground the caverns. They also produce the best wine in Encantadia.

Adamya

Situated in the Southern tip of Encantadia, the Kingdom of Adamya is the home of the little people or prairies. These small yet intelligent creatures are called Adamians and are the keepers of the Jewel of Water. The kingdom is headed by its wise and faithful ruler Imaw, who possesses a staff that enables him to look into the past of a particular person it can also enable him to see current events he can also wield its awesome powers (it seems that the staff is a kind of history book compressed into a single object). Imaw's father Aegen helped the extinction of Etheria and became a member of the Council of Encantadia. Its dissidents, the Adamyans, are also friends to the two other dissidents in Encantadia as well as to the Mandirigmas particularly because of their friendly nature and great wisdom.
The Adamyans are also known for being hard working farmers. They have a vast plantation and beautiful beaches (for their kingdom is very near to the lake/sea/ocean of Adamya) in their kingdom. They seem to only gather food every time without a care in the world.
During one of Encantadia's most turbulent epoch, the Kingdom of Adamya was overpowered by the Hathors' conquest to seize the Water Gem from its keeper. In the battle that transpired, a majority of the little denizens of Adamya died.

Hathoria

On the western border is the Kingdom of Hathoria where the militaristic, vicious and power-famished Hathors abound, it is described as a dark, gloomy kingdom that is also full of decay. It is home to many dangerous beings, bounded by treacherous terrains and caverns. Hathors are known throughout encantadia for their prowess in battle and superior knowledge of the arts of war (only the Sapirians are more cunning and more war-like). During the latter half of his reign, the Hathorian King Arvak embarked on a campaign of conquest to steal all four elemental jewels that would signal the start of a chaotic era in the history of Encantadia. Arvak's ancient predecessor, Bartimus, had a hand in the extinction of Etheria and became a member of the Council (Konseho) of Encantadia. After Arvak died during the fall of Sapiro, his son and successor Hagorn ascended the throne and continued his work.
Hathors multiply every time Encantadia's two moons are simultaneously full. The Hathorian king and a good number of his followers go to Balaak, their place of multiplication. There the King performs a ritual wherein his blood is drunk by Hathors. The "anointed" Hathors are then left inside Balaak for seven days to spontaneously multiply.

Hathors are known to be the most spiritually connected with their ancestors. They have rituals in which the current king would be able to talk with a chosen ancestor. They are also the only people from Encantadia who is not blessed with long age. They grow old and die like humans.

In their battle against Lireo, Hathors were found to have flier commandos. These units were equipped with skydiving gears to attack and board Lirean airships. Their most powerful weapon in war is the Cannon.

Hathoria

Hathoria is a fictional nation created for the Philippine fantasy television show (telefantasya) Encantadia, aired on GMA Network. As revealed in show canon, Hathoria was one of the four major kingdoms comprising the realm of Encantadia, the other kingdoms being: Lireo, Sapiro and Adamya. Covering much of the southwest portion of Encantadia, Hathoria
Covering much of Encantadia's soutwest, Hathoria is largely a barren landscape, devoid of any significant vegetation or wildlife.
Numerous large caverns comprise much of the Hathorian landscape, with a vast tunnel system leading deep into the earth creating a fast and convenient means of transportation for the Hathor.

History

The land where Hathoria now stands was once owned by the Etherian Empire. It was given to Bartimus, the first king of Hathoria, as payment for the bloodguilt Etheria owed after his wife Aranhe was slain by an Etherian prince.
Despite having soverignity, government and its own territory, Hathoria was still little more than a vassal of Etheria.
Throughout the events leading to the Great Encantadian War, Hathoria was the last kingdom to secede and join the rebel alliance against the Etherian Empire.
After the war had been won and the jewel of elements split into four, Hathoria was granted guardianship of the jewel of fire, the powers of which the Hathor fully exploited by developing their smithing and war machinery.
However, they became greedy wanting to be the most powerful kingdom in Encantadia by having the four elemental gems protected by the Diwatas in Lireo. In the end, they were defeated by the allied forces of Lireo, Adamya and Sapiro. Hathoria on Encantadia's Book 3, is now a dead kingdom after the last king, Hagorn died in the war.
Encantadian bats are seen lurking outside the kingdom of Hathoria.
After the last war of Encantadia and Pirena's tutelage of Armea, Pirena went back to Hathoria to say her goodbyes to the land she called her birth place and destroyed Hathoria, leaving only three kingdoms in Encantadia: Lireo, Sapiro and Adamya.

Government and Society

Hathorian royalty adhered to the traditional patriarchal definition of an absolute monarchy, meaning the eldest son of the king is next in line to rule.
Their close ties to their ancestors and mystical inclinations make Hathorian society very similar to that of Lireo. Their guardianship of the Jewel of Fire has influenced much of Hathorian technology, including their machines of war.
Unmarried Hathor of royal lineage can be identified by distinct facial markings. These markings resemble fire and flame patterns usually situated around the eyes or on the forehead, to be removed upon marriage. Like most of the other kingdoms, royal marriages are arranged.
There have been four (4) instituted rulers of Hathoria since its founding:

Known Monarchs

  • Aranhe - the first queen of Hathoria. Her death resulted in the establishment of the Hathorian kingdom.
  • Bartimus - is the first King of Hathoria.

Bartimus

Bartimus is a fictional character from the Philippine telefantasya Etheria, which is a prequel/sequel to the highly rated Encantadia. Bartimus is played by Filipino actor Noni Buencamino.
Bartimus is the founder and first ruler of Hathoria.

Character backgorund

Bartimus is the first King of Hathoria. He received the kingdom of Hathoria as compensation for the death of his wife, Arachn (Aranghe), who was slain by an Etherian prince.
He formed an alliance with King Meno of Sapiro, Queen Cassiopea of Lireo and King Aegen of Adamya which lead to the fall of Etheria, the most powerful kingdom of Encantadia during his reign.
  • Arvak - Arvak is the only son of Bartimus.

Arvak

Arvak is a fictional character from the Philippine telefantasya Etheria which is a prequel/sequel to the highly rated Encantadia. Arvak is played by Filipino actor Michael Flores.

Character Background

Arvak is the only son of Bartimus. During Bartimus reign as King, he already had a son with Argi-a named Hagorn. He wanted Hathoria to become the most powerful kingdom in Encantadia, that he even killed his father, Bartimus, for him to materialize his evil plans. He embarked on a campaign of conquest to steal all four elemental jewels that would signal the start of a chaotic era in the history of Encantadia. He destroyed the kingdom of Sapiro and Adamya and killed King Armeo and Queen Mayne.
  • Hagorn - Hagorn is the rightful heir to the Hathorian throne after his father, Arvak. Hagorn, during his reign, was as evil as his father Arvak. This evilness rooted from the rejection he experienced from Mine-a. When Etheria was still in its full glory, Hagorn was bethroted to marry the Etherian princess Mine-a, the only girl she loved all his life. He was deeply in love with Minea but unfortunately it is Raquim, his bestfriend whom Mine-a loves. He felt betrayed, he disquised himself as Raquim to fool Mine-a, thus giving life to Pirena. However, in Etheria, Encantadia's Book 2, the Sang'gres have made changes in the past which somehow changed how Pirena was conceived. He killed Prince Raquim in the mortal world. He died in the hands of Amihan, the daughter of Raquim and Mine-a, which during that time is the Queen of Lireo.

Etheria

Note: These information are only for the dynasty of Etheria.
The most powerful kingdom yet in the dawning age of Encantadia. It is located on the middle of Encantadia, obviously surrounded by its neighboring kingdoms, making it the capital-kingdom. This is not only what many encantados call it, but also the most "scared-off" above all kingdoms, but that was in the ancient times.

Etheria contains four more sub-kingdoms, or called in Enchanta, Heras, or tribes in English. They are also the homes of the four guardians of the Golden Hourglass. Hera Andal, citadel of Etheria, housing the powerful Queen Avria, center of medicine of the kingdom, is located in the middle of Etheria. Hera Sensa, home to the "mind-benders" of Encantadia, where Hera Andora lives, located west of Hera Andal. Hera Volo, source of Hera Andal's Kawals and warriors, located just a little west from the Lireo-Etheria boundary, home of the time-keepers in Etheria who can manipulate the pace of time, place of origin of the most powerful warrior of Etheria, Hera Juvila. And Hera Aega, south of Etheria (far from the bustling cities of Hera Andal, Hera Sensa and Hera Volo), tribe of the women-warriors who can change the emotions of anyone they desire, tribe where Hera Odessa lives.

Etheria was reborn by its key, Sang'gre Cassandra, and was destroyed by the four Sang'gres, Pirena, Amihan, Alena and Danaya.

Lireo

Lirean society is matriarchal, meaning that women carry a higher civil status than their male counterparts. Proof of this is the fact that only a female sang'gre in the matriarch's line may ascend the throne and that the Ynang Reyna is forbidden to fall in love and marry or take a husband. The head of Lireo carries the title of Reyna (or Ynang Reyna if already a mother).
There have been 11 instituted rulers of Lireo since its founding. A Sang'gre (Diwata of the royal bloodline) has ruled over Lireo throughout its history, except for two periods: first, between the reigns of Cassiopea and Mine-a, and, second, during the Hathorian occupation of the throne under Agane.
  • Mine-a — Mother of Pirena, Amihan, Alena and Danaya. In spite of her dark past, Mine-a ruled Lireo with the kindness and wisdom befitting a queen. She was known as the daughter of the half-Diwata, half-Etherian Heran Memen and Avria, the Queen of Etheria and Head of Hera Andal, and Cassiopea's older half-sister. But, later it was found out that she was the daughter of a Diwata, stolen by Avria and was treated as an Etherian.

Mine-a

Mine-a is a character from the Filipino telefantasya saga Encantadia produced by GMA Network. Also known as Ynang Reyna, Mine-a is a queen of the Diwata kingdom of Lireo, and the mother of main characters Pirena, Amihan, Alena and Danaya.

Mine-a has been played by several Filipina actresses. Dawn Zulueta played Mine-a in the first Encantadia series. Nadine Samonte, on the other hand, played the young Mine-a in the Etheria series. However, the Ynang Reyna character was originally played by Giselle Toengi in Mulawin, the series from which Encantadia spun off.

Character background

Named after the word for snow in Enchanta (the Encantadia language). Long ago, in the earlier days of Etheria, there was a diwata named Esmeralda, who had powers in whatever words she lets go from her mouth. Once, a couple of Etherians tried stealing her sceptre but they did not succeed. Instead, Esmeralda had bestowed unto them and the whole of Etheria, a curse that one of her race would be the one to bring Etheria into nothing but ashes, leaving memories of their kingdom being a dreadful one. This threatens the kingdom and begins to turn diwatas into their slaves, keeping an eye on every diwata being born and killing whoever does even just a small heroic work. All these were done to prevent the threatening prophecy from happening.

They became even more horrified when the papers indicating every prophecy mentioned that there would be a diwata who would someday be a powerful queen- Mine-a. She was then adopted by Etherian Queen Avria, the latter being barren. This was done so that Mine-a would be the future queen of Etheria rather than being the queen of the diwatas, who would be the one to fulfill Esmeralda's curse. She grew up recognizing Avria and Memen as her real parents, and that she is a true Etherian. Little does she know that the diwatas that she loathes the most is her race. Avria, upon the goading of Barkus, killed Mine-a's real mother and raised Mine-a as her daughter.
Before the Sanggres changed history, the young Mine-a was angry at the betrayal of her father. Although she appeared the dutiful daughter who is engaged to Prince Hagorn of Hathoria, Mine-a led a double life. She enchanted the Kabilan to become a weapon to destroy the Diwatas, then disguised as a lowly diwata servant (Queshya) she hunts for her father and his mistress in order to kill them. It was during one of these forays that she would meet Prince Raquim, who would know her as Queshya. After learning that she has Diwata blood in her like her father, Mine-a realized that what she is doing is wrong and desired to vindicate herself for what she has done.

After Cassiopea left Lireo (she was banished because she separated the brillante into four pieces), the throne of Lireo was entrusted to Queen Ursula after which was succeeded by Queen Demetria. Their reigns were short because of the Hathorian disease that swept the diwatas and claimed their lives. Evades came to Mine-a and told her that she was to become the next queen. She asks Evades why and he answers because it is her destiny and with the mark on her back to signify that she will reign in Lireo longer than any of its past rulers.
As queen of Lireo, Mine-a was the keeper of the Jewel of Air and the magical scepter (this will later be claimed by Hagorn during an invasion of Lireo) and mother to the four elemental goddesses who will later carry the magic that the four jewels bear.

When Hathoria invaded Adamya, which was aided by Sapiro, the three jewels kept by the three kingdoms fell to Prince Raquim of Sapiro's possession. With Adamya defeated and Sapiro the next target of Hathoria, Raquim brought the jewels to Lireo. This was how all four elemental jewels came to be guarded by the diwatas.
Mine-a had four daughters, each one (except Alena & Danaya) having a different father. Pirena is her daughter with Hagorn, King of Hathoria. They were once betrothed when Etheria was still standing, but the two later became enemies. Amihan is her daughter with Raquim, Prince of Sapiro and her beloved. However, both Raquim and Amihan were parted from Mine-a when Raquim decided to leave Encantadia and live in the world of mortals, taking his daughter with him. Alena and Danaya were the only sisters who shared the same father, Enuo, who was killed while fighting the Hathors. These two daughters were born not out of love but out of destiny. Since Enuo was so good and kind, he was entrusted to be the father of both Alena and Danaya. With the exception of Amihan, who grew up with her father, Mine-a's daughters never met, or even knew the identity of their fathers. When Hagorn crossed the portal into the mortal world to find and kill Raquim, the young Amihan was found by the queen's guards and reunited with her mother.

When her children had grown into lovely young women, Mine-a learned that she would soon die and leave for Devas. To determine the successor to the throne, she consulted her advisors and then told her daughters to prepare for a test. During one of Mine-a's discussions with Imaw, Pirena overheard her mother wish that any of her three younger daughters, and not Pirena, would become queen. Mine-a mentioned something about Pirena's "blood" (but did not expound on the subject, which mystified even the wise Imaw) and that she is sorry that Pirena would not be able to fulfill her ambition. By then Pirena had already gone, angry and hurt with questions on her mind.

The test for the sisters turned out to be fighting with a cloaked warrior. The goal is to take the "key" that the warrior possessed. The warrior wore a white cloak with a brown face covering (intriguingly, the attire of a common Sapirian warrior) and wore a key pendant around its neck.

Danaya went first and it was her battle that was most difficult (she even stepped on traps). Defeated, she went home sulking. Alena went next and also succumbed to defeat the warrior but she was just happy about it (to everyone's puzzlement). Next went Amihan. When she proved to be strong, Pirena joined in and together they fought in forcing the warrior to retreat to the woods. In their pursuit, Amihan fell off a cliff. Pirena then tried to save her sister but remembered that Amihan was also her rival, thus, she kicked Amihan's hand, letting her fall down. The cloaked warrior flew down, rescuing the diwata. It was at this moment that Amihan recognized the warrior as her mother. Mine-a uncovered her face and told Amihan that she just found the key: a child should know that her mother's love would always show through, despite any sort of disguise.

Back on the cliff, Mine-a announced Amihan as the winner. This news was not received well by Pirena, who challenged her mother to another duel. Mine-a would rather not duel with her daughter but was forced to accept the challenge in accordance to the rules of Lireo.

Pirena was surprisingly stronger and faster during the second duel, almost defeating Mine-a if not for the intervention of Mine-a's other daughters. The intervention enraged Pirena, who left Lireo to join forces with its enemy, Hathoria.

The diwatas soon realized the source of Pirena's new strength when they discovered that the jewel of fire was missing. The theft showed that it is not enough to put the jewels in a guarded room. Mine-a decided that each of her three remaining daughters should guard one of the remaining jewels. Thus Amihan, who succeeded as queen, came to be the guardian of the air jewel, the water jewel was given to Alena, and the protection of the earth jewel was given to Danaya.
Mine-a died in Lireo just before Lira (Milagros) was born. Thereafter she resided in the peace of Devas. She reappeared later in the Encantadia series when Lira came to Devas for advice. She told Lira that the only way Encantadia will be united is the unification of her four daughters, who have gone astray by Bathala's will, and Lira is the key for this to happen. Lira had been identified by Cassiopea as luntaie, the saviour. Mine-a is also the reason why Kahlil wanted to go back to Devas when he was resurrected by Alipato, Pirena's spirit guide.

Powers

Minea is one of the most powerful diwatas of Encantadia she possess many powers:
  • Teleportation- Minea has the ability to transport herself to another place without occupying space. She can only teleport when she knows the place. This is also a common sanggre abilty.
  • Energy Manipulation- Minea can manipulate and generate various energy which can be used in many ways.
  • Blessing & Curse Bestowal- Minea can bestow someone with a blessing and curse. She inherited this ability to her ancestor:(ESMERALDA,the most powerful diwata).
  • Telekinesis- Minea has the ability to move/manipulate objects through her mind.
  • Elementalist'- Minea possess the ability to control or create fire, wind, water, and earth. This power was heightened when the 4 gems was entrusted to her.
Minea also possess a variety of unspecified powers
  • Pirena — eldest among the four daughters of Mine-a, the keeper of the Fire Gem. She grew up harboring bitterness and envy towards her sisters, especially towards Amihan. Although Pirena is really kind at heart, her dama, Gurna, poisoned her mind, blinding her from the truth that she is really loved. She became Queen of the Diwatas after invading Lireo and overthrowing Amihan. She has the ability to morph into any person she likes, a skill she inherited from her father, Hagorn. However, unlike her father, she can sustain the transformation for as long as she wishes because of her Diwata blood. She can also fly like a rocket launched into the air if need be. She's the most cunning and ambitious among the four Sangg'gres. She is also confident and hard working. She stayed a villain 3/4 of the series until she found the love of her mother, sisters, and daughter she thought she did not have. Her personal weapon are the twin daggers. Mother of Mira.

Pirena

Sang'gre Pirena, the keeper of the Gem of Fire and mother of Mira.
Pirena is a major character from the Philippine fantasy series Encantadia and Etheria produced by GMA Network. Among the four elemental Sang'gres, Pirena is the guardian of the red Gem of Fire. Filipina actress Sunshine Dizon plays Pirena.

Pirena also appeared in Mulawin as an accomplice of Ravenum. Her character was only seen as a ghostly image, with her face in shadow. It is quite unclear whether her appearing in humanoid form was prior to her being in a smoke form or vice versa.
The name Pirena may derive from the root pyro- meaning "fire", which evokes the character's affinity to this element.
Character story
Mine-a with her young daughter, Pirena

Mine-a with her young daughter, Pirena

Pirena is the eldest daughter of Mine-a, the Queen of the Diwatas by Hagorn. She is known to be the most intelligent Sanggre of all the four.
When she was young, Gurna, her dama, poisoned her mind. She made Pirena believe that Amihan is up to stealing the crown of Lireo from her. Proud and cunning, she has always believed the throne was her birthright. She felt hurt and betrayed upon overhearing a conversation between Minea and Imaw in which the queen expressed that she would rather that any of her daughters ascend the throne other than Pirena.
During the test to determine the true heir, she is disqualified and the throne was granted to Amihan. In a last attempt to get back her birthright, Pirena challenges her mother for the throne. To aid her in the duel, Pirena steals the Jewel of fire. She would have defeated her mother had her other sisters not intervened. Failing to get the throne, she curses Encantadia and leaves, taking the Jewel of Fire with her. Her theft made Queen Mine-a decide to separate the remaining gems by giving each to her other three daughters for safe-keeping.

Princess Pirena in the forest
Pirena immediately seeks an alliance with Hathoria and as a gift, used the fire gem to rekindle the fires of their forges (the fire gem used to belong to Hathoria but their former king lost it in battle with the army of Sapiro). King Hagorn welcomes her and she joins in their campaign to conquer Encantadia.

Upon hearing the news that Amihan is pregnant, Pirena hatches a plan to conquer Lireo. The first step to her plan is to get pregnant and give birth at the same time as Amihan. She does this by mesmerizing a Lirean palace guard then killing him after getting what she needed. She secluded herself in Hathoria during her pregnancy, and few knew that as Queen Amihan gave birth to Lira, heir to the throne of Lireo, Pirena also gave birth to a baby girl, which she named Mira.

Pirena returned to Lireo and presented herself before the young queen, pretending repentance and asking for forgiveness. Amihan forgives her, unaware of her evil plans. While no one was looking, Pirena switched the queen's baby with her own daughter. By this act, Pirena designed that it is her daughter, and not Amihan's, who will ascend to the throne.

Intending to kill Amihan's real daughter but unable to do so because of the protective magic surrounding the child, the only way she could think of disposing the child is to bring it across the portal of Asnamon and leave the baby in the world of mortals where she hoped it would die.

Amihan would not suspect the switch. Mira herself would grow up thinking that she is Lira, the queen's daughter.

Still plotting to conquer Lireo, Pirena knew she had possess all four gems. When Alena thought that her beloved Ybarro had died, she grieved alone in the woods where Pirena took the opportunity to disguise herself as Bathala and convince her sister to give up the Jewel of Water in order to alleviate her pain. To cover her tracks, Pirena wiped out Alena's memory and turned her over to the care of Hitano, a Lirean lieutenant in love with Alena, who promised to hide Alena in the woods where they would live under different identities. Thus, it was Pirena disguised as Alena that the Lireans discovered lifeless in the woods.

It would take years, long enough for Mira to turn into a young woman, before Pirena would show her true colors and Amihan discovers her treachery. The Hathors and Pirena invade Lireo and conquer it. Pirena had a long battle with Amihan but she failed to defeat her because Amihan had training from her father when she was young and Amihan is the strongest warrior in the whole of Encantadia. She could have killed Pirena if it wasn't for Alena who was confused at that time but Alena sided with Amihan. Pirena was able to escape and thousands of Hathors sourrounded Queen Amihan. Pirena lost no time in declaring herself as the new Queen but in the eyes of the Diwatas, the mandirigmas and the Adamyans, Amihan still remains queen of Lireo and of Encantadia. The first thing she does is imprison Amihan and attempt to take the Jewel of Air from her. Amihan would eventually escape.
Pirena would discover that her troubles do not end once she becomes queen of Lireo. She had to deal with rebels led by her sisters, and her daughter Mira, who finally discovers the truth, despises her. She would get a dose of her own medicine when King Hagorn turns his back on her. Her reign would be short-lived and she soon finds herself stripped of the crown, homeless and alone - with only her loyal dama, Gurna, to attend to her.

Still proud, Pirena would not join forces with her sisters even though Hathoria had become their common enemy. When King Hagorn held Mira hostage, Pirena struck out on her own to save her daughter but ended up being captured instead. Asval struck her fatally and she dies without releasing the gem in her possession, thus depriving Encantadia of the benefits of fire which her jewel controls.

The real Lira would embark on a quest to get her, and her jewel, back from Devas in order to save Encantadia from disaster. Hagorn also coveted the fire gem and found a way to intercept Pirena's spirit as it travelled to Devas. Hagorn won the race in reaching Pirena and grabbed the gem from her. Pirena's spirit woke up at the touch of Hagorn and through it realized he is her father.

Back from the dead, the ungrateful Pirena still refused to join her sisters and she goes back to living alone. She could remember nothing of what happened while she was in transit to Devas, and she could not pinpoint what it is about King Hagorn that is tugging at her memory. She will eventually suspect that he is her father.
The turning point in her life happened when she learned, through Imaw's magic staff, how Gurna's web of lies had made her suspicious of her mother and sisters and blinded her to the love they were willing to give her. Angry at being manipulated, she kills Gurna. Full of remorse and guilt at the havoc she brought upon Lireo, she attempted to kill herself but was prevented from doing so by her sisters, who at the time were looking for her in the forest.
This time Pirena was sincere in asking forgiveness from each of them. Danaya healed the wound Pirena inflicted on herself and the four sisters were united once again. It would have been a happy ending had it been a time of peace. Unfortunately, Lireo and its allies are still at war with Hathoria, and Pirena would lose her daughter Mira before it is over.

It is Pirena who would battle Hagorn and his armies to aid her sisters in ending the war, and at his death Pirena would get back her fire jewel and confirm that she is the daughter of the last king of Hathoria.
In the last war of Encantadia, she confronted Hagorn at the Sapirian front and officially tells him that she did not recognize him as her father because of the things he had done to her loved ones. She told her father that she could kill him and in an angry fit, Hagorn uses the gem of water, which he Alena gave him together with her life to save Arman. As Pirena fell, Hagorn pointed his dagger at Pirena but suddenly said that he could not kill her as Hagorn stabs himself. Pirena screams "AMA!!!" (Filipino for father) and witnessed as Hagorn dies. In Hagorn's death, he gives the gem of water to her daughter telling her that he is very proud of his daughter and removes the dagger out of him and dies leaving Pirena in tears.

She teaches and guides Queen Armea as Armea rules over Sapiro. After her work in Sapiro was done, she said her goodbyes to her birthplace, Hathoria and destroyed the kingdom using the gem of fire. Like her other sisters, her story became the stuff of legend as they play in the air as they all say.

Pirena in Etheria

Pirena would go back in time with her sisters to save her grand niece, Cassandra, who was kidnapped by remnants of the lost kingdom of Etheria.

Their presence in the past distorts the history of Encantadia and Pirena realizes that her own existence is threatened. The events immediately push Mine-a, her mother, closer to Raquim, Amihan's father. If Mine-a does not spend time with Hagorn and become pregnant by him, Pirena would not be born, and this disturbs the four sang'gres.
In order to ensure her conception, Pirena goes to Hagorn. She offers him help in finding Mine-a and Raquim, both of whom have just eloped and have fled to the forest. Summoning the elemental powers of Fire within nature, Pirena succeeds in creating a fiery circle that detects the whereabouts of both Raquim and Mine-a. Hagorn then says that he knows where the two lovers are hiding. Pirena teleports Hagorn to where Mine-a is. Raquim decided to leave Mine-a's side for a while, which gives Hagorn the chance to be alone with Mine-a. Pirena gives Hagorn a portion of her power to shape-shift into any humanoid form. She tells him that he can become anyone he desires. Hagorn then transforms into Raquim and approaches Mine-a. From this trickery, a red flower blooms which is a sign of Pirena's conception.

Personality

Naturally proud and gifted with a keen intelligence, Pirena believes that Amihan stole the throne of Lireo as well as the affections of their mother Mine-a from her. She is focused and is willing to do whatever is necessary to achieve her ends. Pirena looks upon her hand-maiden Gurna as a confidant. Though outwardly cold, Pirena is actually a kind Sang'gre who is consumed by the belief that she can rule Lireo much better than Minea.

Pirena is also impatient and cannot easily hide her true feelings. She always ends up quarrelling with the youngest of the four, Danaya.

Characteristic of the element Fire, Pirena is very assertive and willful. Her bravery and fervor in battle is evidence of her Warrior nature. She is the most frank and brutally honest of the sisters, rarely considering the effect of her words to those around her. In Etheria, she is on the side of good but often exhibits her venomous side when faced with her enemies.

Love interest

In the earlier episodes of Encantadia's first book, Queen Pirena was seen poisoned by her sister, Alena in the form of a flower, after telling her that her son would never meet her for she will be brought to Lireo and serve as a beautiful flower to decorate the palace. After this, she then fainted and was seen by Asval in the forest. From his loyal companion Axilom, did he learned that the diwata he is now seeing is Pirena, the Queen of Lireo. Upon knowing this, he instantly brought her to Lireo and had her cured. Pirena learned of this and wanted to thank him personally. Her orders were done and their meeting had become the start of Asval's first step in courting her. The second one is appearing before her inside the Queen's chamber. He would always through sweet words to her but it only bounced in the course of words shunting him away. However, this never made him indignant. Instead, it made him go on. True enough, the night came when the Queen gave in to him. Despite of her as the Queen of Lireo meaning she is unallowed to love, she still managed to love him freely, believing that she had finally found what she was looking for - love and acceptance.
Pirena's handmaiden, Gurna, tried to warn her lady about Asval's scheme to bring her down, but Pirena did not believe it at first. Asval eventually revealed that he was not in love with Pirena and what he actually wanted was to end her reign over Encantadia.

This was the only time that Pirena had become heartbroken which led her to rage over him, making her determined to declare that she hates him enough that she could easily spit on him. However, she got over Asval in a short span of time and moved on. Being at peace with her sisters later on made her almost forget him.

Royals, Asval and Pirena of the Past and Present

In the prequel-cum-sequel Etheria, Pirena meets the young Asval. Still hurt and unaccepting of her future love's betrayal, she antagonizes the young prince in a way of nothing but communicating with him in a cold manner. Meanwhile, it is being shown that the younger Asval is developing a genuine affection for Pirena as opposed to the cold, scheming adult version. Because of the Sanggre's favor in letting the young Cassiopeia go to the land of the diwatas, he permitted her to do so even if his mind has an opposite decision. He did this all because of Pirena. It seems that he was true to his words in saying that he would stop at nothing to gain her affection. He even asked for her hand in marriage. However, the Sanggre of Fire only expressed her revenge for the prince's future lies by swearing that no one will ever learn to love him. As a result, her answer was a 'no'.

In Encantadia-Pagibig Hanggang Wakas, Pirena was questioned by her sister, Amihan, if she is happy as well with her life without anyone to love. With this question, the hurt in Pirena's heart had somewhat bled for a while. Meanwhile, Asval's genuine loyalty still is mystifying and the answer to whether he truly is inlove with the warrior princess of fire or not still remains to be unknown.

Family affiliation

Pirena is the firstborn among the daughters of Ynang Reyna Mine-a. Her younger half-sisters are Amihan, Alena and Danaya. Her father was Hagorn, king of Hathoria, from whom her powers of shape-shifting and swiftness in battle are believed to have been inherited. She gave birth to Mira and exchanged her daughter with Amihan's to make sure that Lira will not become Queen of Lireo.
All she ever wanted was to prove that she was worthy of the Lirean throne.

Pirena grew up believing that her mother and sisters did not love her. As a result, she became bitter towards her family.

Her importance in the balance of nature

Without her, there would be no light and warmth. This was evidenced when Pirena was killed by Asval during her attempt to save Mira from Hagorn's captivity. Hagorn forced her to give up her fire gem, but Pirena being courageous and headstrong was determined to choose death over giving up her 'jewel'. She summoned her gem not to leave her the moment she dies. Her death resulted in a curse wherein the sun refused to shine and the Encantados experienced a freezing weather.

Her niece, Lira, went to the forest to search for Evades so she could bring back Pirena to life.

Abilities and weapons

Special abilities

Glamouring (limited to humanoid forms) - Though it may appear in the series that Pirena is capable of shape-shifting, what she exhibits is actually a different ability called glamouring. Unlike Danaya who can really change her physical structure whenever she takes a different form, Pirena can create illusions of being who she wants to be. Her form does not change, she only takes on the image of the humanoid appearance she chooses. This is the same ability that she inherited from her father, Lord Hagorn.

Teleportation - this ability is inherent to all Sang'gres of Encantadia
Flight - Pirena's flight uses the same principle as that of rocket missiles and space crafts. She uses her fire power as some sort of a booster to propel her upward. Though she can travel at really rapid speed with this form of flight, she can only travel in straight lines.
Pirena, being born with the ability to tap into the powers of the Brilyante ng Apoy, can control fire and light. At one point, she even used her power to steal the "light" of Alena's mind to make her forget everything. When she took the Brilyante ng Apoy from Lireo's treasury, Pirena speed and strength greatly heightened, and this helped in defeating her Ynang Reyna Mine-a in battle.
Energy powers - she is capable of generating a red energy which can be used in many variety ways
The Brilyante ng Apoy also has the ability to call on any deceased citizen of Encantadia, they be in Devas or Balaak, and bring them back to life. Pirena, being the keeper of the jewel, gained this power. There is no guarantee though that the soul and memory can be resurrected as well. Pirena exhibited this power twice-- when she brought Ebrio back from Balaak and when she summoned Kahlil from Devas.
Weapons
Twin daggers - Pirena wielded 2 daggers and used them in battle until the events towards the end of Etheria. Bathala evolved the daggers into a longer, sharper, sword.
Brilyante ng Apoy- blesses its keeper the power to control and fire.
  • Amihan — the second eldest among the four sisters, Amihan is the Keeper of the Air Gem and is Mine-a's successor to the throne. Unlike her sisters who lived with Mine-a in Lireo since birth, Amihan was taken by her ado (father) Raquim, a Sapirian prince, to the mortal realm. There, she grew up by the sword of her ado until he was killed and she was brought back to her mother. Amihan sits in Lireo with the kindness and wisdom of her mother and the unmatched sworsdmanship skills and strong arms of her father. She is also the mother of Lira, her only heir. Amihan is actually not a pureblooded Diwata because she is half-Diwata and half-Sapirian, but she is identified as a Diwata with the mark on her back. Her control of the wind allows her to fly (alone or with someone) and feel the wind's emotions. She has also developed a strong link to the mulawin Avilan ever since he appeared to her when she was still a child. When Amihan evaded death for the second time, the marks on her palm disappeared to signify that she is finally in control of her own destiny. Since then, she is also able to summon a kambal-diwa by the name of Aera. Amihan's personal weapon is the broad sword Arkrey she inherited from her ado Raquim. Before her father breathed his last, she made a promise to avenge his death, and she carried this promise to its fulfillment. Mother of Lira.

Amihan

Amihan.jpg
Amihan is a major character from the Philippine fantasy television series Encantadia and Etheria produced by GMA Network. Among the four elemental Sang'gres, Amihan is the guardian of the blue Gem of Wind. She also became a Queen of Lireo having succeeded her mother Minea. Filipina actress Iza Calzado plays Amihan.
The name Amihan means "northeast monsoon" in the Tagalog language, evoking the character's affinity to the wind. There is also an Amihan in Philippine mythology.

Character story

Amihan grew up with her father Raquim in the world of mortals, believing that her mother was dead and that her father was a miner of precious metals who had the knack of finding gold. She would wonder why other kids go to a place called school while she stays at home to practice swordfighting, but her father would not give her a straight answer. Since she was taught to use the sword since she was childhood, she grew up being one skilled fighter. Having no clue of having a delightful future, it was unknown to her that she would someday be considered as the most superior female warrior of Encantadia.
Amihan unwittingly summoned her powers while trying to escape her father's jealous co-workers. When it was apparent that her ability to control the wind had surfaced, Raquim realized he must tell her about her true identity and her magical heritage. He would begin by telling her a story about a far away land called Encantadia, the four jewels held by its four kingdoms which maintained the balance of power, the attempt by the kingdom of Hathoria to rule Encantadia, and how the battle waged by Hathoria against Adamya and Sapiro brought the four jewels under the protection of the diwatas of Lireo. He would never get to tell her all that she needed to know.
Amihan would wake up one night to tell her father that she dreamt of a beautiful woman warning her that they are in danger. Raquim recognized the import of the dream and barely had time to prepare before strangers appeared and pursued them. After watching her father's death, Amihan rushed at his killers, her father's sword in hand, intent on having her revenge. She was quickly disarmed and almost beheaded by the leader who hesitated upon seeing her birthmark. The murderers left when another group of strangely clad men appeared.
These men whisked Amihan away to Encantadia, the mere existence of which upturned everything she had believed about her existence. She would discover that she is not mortal, but a diwata, and that her mother is not only alive, but is the Ynang Reyna (Queen Mother) Mine-a of the kingdom of Lireo. She also finds out that her father was a Prince of the fallen kingdom of Sapiro, and was known as one of the best swordsmen that ever lived in Encantadia.
She would meet her three sisters, Pirena, Alena and Danaya. All of them, like her, bear the birthmark of the sang'gres (a diwata belonging to a royal family). They tell her that they have different fathers, all of whom had died while fighting the Hathors - the same people who killed her father. Learning this strengthened the young Amihan's resolve to fight the Hathors and avenge not only her father's death, but to avenge everyone who died and left children like her fatherless.
Amihan would spend the following years learning all about her people, the land of Encantadia, speaking their language, and learning how to act like a Sang'gre. The only thing that her mother was not too pleased with is that she would not give up the art of sword-fighting, as she considers it her heritage being the daughter of a Sapirean prince and master swordsman.
Amihan would be seen by some as the most likely candidate for the throne of Lireo, and this upsets Pirena, who is convinced that their mother is playing favorites, and had thought from the moment that Amihan arrived in the palace that the queen loved Amihan more than all her other children. After all, it is no secret in Lireo that of the men who fathered the queen's daughters, Mine-a loved Prince Raquim the most.
Pirena and Amihan

Time passed and the four Sang'gres become ladies. Amihan grows up beautiful, mature and motherly. Pirena's anger and jealousy only increased with time and it gets the best of her, making her bitter, cunning and deceitful. Alena grows up innocent, beautiful and demure as ever, and her beauty gets her quite a few suitors, including Ybarro (later named as Ybrahim). Danaya grows up into a strong-willed, rebellious, albeit militaristic woman with a soft spot for nature.
When the butterflies from Devas came to fetch Mine-a, a new queen to ascend the throne must be chosen. Mine-a, after having consulted her advisors, told her daughters to prepare for a test. With the exception of Alena, the young sang'gres spend time honing their skills, each hoping that they will be chosen. All assumed that judging will be fair, except for Pirena who overheard Mine-a talking with Imaw and wishing any one of her three younger daughters win the contest and not Pirena. Understandably, Pirena was angry and hurt, with many questions occupying her mind.
The test turned out to be a duel with a cloaked warrior, clad in white with a brown face cover (the attire is, intriguingly, of a common Sapirian warrior). The goal was to retrieve a "key" in the warrior's possession, which most assumed was the pendant it wore around its neck.
Danaya faced the warrior first but was beaten, next was Alena who was defeated just as easily. Amihan followed and lasted longer than the first two, although the warrior still looked too strong for her. For reasons best known to her (but most probably because she feared that Amihan might best the warrior and win the throne), Pirena decided to join the fray instead of waiting for her turn. Together, they forced the warrior to retreat into the woods.
In the midst of their pursuit, Amihan fell off a cliff, Pirena then tried to save her but then remembering that it would ruin her chance of becoming queen, kicked Amihan's hand, letting her fall down. The cloaked warrior flew down rescuing the diwata. It was at this moment that Amihan discovered the warrior's identity. It was Ynang Reyna who stated that the key was recognizing her since a mother's love would always show through, despite of any sort of disguise. They were both safe going back up the cliff.
Because of Pirena's betrayal, Amihan is declared the heir to the throne. Pirena, hurt and angry, decides to challenge the queen for the throne and steals the crystal of fire (with the goading of her long-time nanny and secret-Hathor-spy Gurna) to ensure her success. Pirena manages to bring down Ynang Reyna aided by the gem's power. But before the last blow was struck, her three sisters join forces and defeat her. She escapes and allies herself with the Hathors.
During the ceremony to acknowledge Amihan as the legal heir to the throne, the three remaining elemental gems are entrusted to each of the sisters. Amihan is entrusted with the air gem, Alena with the water gem, and Danaya with the earth gem.
It soon becomes apparent that Amihan must also produce her heir. She invokes Emre, their Bathala to help her find a worthy father to her child. She would meet a prince called Ybrahim in her dream. She would learn upon waking up that the dream was a collective dream, and she had indeed conceived a child with him.
Mine-a would die before Amihan's healthy daughter, named Lira, is born. The baby is blessed with extraordinary powers by her aunts Alena and Danaya. Danaya blesses Lira with an innate protection against Pirena's powers and energies while Alena gifts her with a beautiful voice that can magically soothe and calm her mother's (Amihan's) heart.
Pirena would return to Lireo begging for forgiveness and Amihan would pardon her sister. Unknown to her, Pirena is still in league with the Hathors. Pirena she sees the newborn Princess Lira as a major hindrance, so she kidnaps the baby and tries to kill her. However, she fails because of Danaya's blessing and her dagger could not touch the child so instead she sends Lira to the mortal realm through the Tree of Asnamon. She then replaces the real Princess Lira with her own child, Mira. Amihan would never suspect that the child growing up with her is not her real daughter.
Amihan would suffer another loss when Alena's body is found lifeless in the forest. It appeared that mourning for Ybarro, the mandirigma she had fallen in love with, and whom she now thinks is dead, Alena killed herself. Lireo would send off Alena's body to Devas on a funeral pyre, not realizing that it was actually Pirena, who had shape-shifted into the form of Alena, that they were mourning over (Pirena could withstand flames because of the fire gem's power).
The child they called Lira would grow up into a smart, confident, but proud young woman. Lira would often leave the palace and explore the woods on her own. One of her favorite stops would be Cassiopeia's lair, where she would ask the seer about the future. When Cassiopeia foretold that Lira would love a mortal, the young girl became curious and found a way to reopen Asnamon, the portal between worlds. The opening of the portal would be instrumental in bringing back the real daughter of Amihan.
When Amihan and her party was ambushed by Hathors in the forest, someone would come to their rescue whom Amihan would recognize as Ybrahim, the man she met in the dream where she conceived her daughter. Ybrahim would recognize her face, and is amazed to find out that the encounter they had in a dream would result to him being a father to the daughter of the queen of Lireo. Amihan brings Ybrahim to Lireo to introduce him to the court as the father of her child. Lira would not accept the fact that her father is a member of the mandirigma caste - who are considered society's outcasts.
Ybrahim would later find out from his foster father that he is the long-lost crown prince of the fallen kingdom of Sapiro. Amihan gladly helped him in his quest to find out about his heritage as a Sapirean, for the records of Lireo have preserved some writings about the kingdom. Amihan would slowly fall in love with Ybrahim, albeit reluctantly, for the laws of Lireo forbid its queen from marrying. She would not tell Ybrahim or any other person about her feelings.
Amihan's growing love for the mandirigma will have dire consequences, for Ybrahim is the same Ybarro that Alena had fallen in love with. The complications started when Danaya discovered Alena alive in the forest and brought her back to Lireo. Alena had lost her memory and could not remember any of them, including Ybarro. Yet, this does not prevent Alena from being attracted to Ybrahim the moment she saw him unconscious and recuperating from a poisonous wound in the queen's quarters. Amihan would feel jealousy and Pirena would use this to her advantage.
It concerned Amihan and Danaya that Alena could not remember who she was, how she came back from the dead, how she ended up being Hitano's captive in the forest, and more important, what happened to the jewel of water. Both assumed that Alena had been brought back from death and she probably brought her jewel to Devas and left it there. They concluded that if Alena goes to Devas, she may get back her memory and as well as her jewel. Amihan allowed Alena to make the trip, and Danaya volunteered to accompany her.
Pirena, who knew the truth, did not want the journey to Devas to happen, for it would reveal that Alena never died, which would mean that the jewel of water was not in Devas. When Amihan had second thoughts about Alena getting back her memory, which included remembering her love for Ybarro/Ybrahim, Pirena subtly convinced Amihan to withdraw her permission.
Disgusted that the queen allowed her personal feelings to cloud her judgement, Danaya disobeys and towing Alena with her, goes ahead with the journey to Devas. At Pirena's goading, Amihan sends her soldiers after her two younger sisters. Alena would be captured and brought back at once to Lireo.
Danaya would elude her pursuers, and when she reappears in Lireo, she attempts to assassinate the queen. The guards capture Danaya but she later manages to escape. She would then reappear at the palace gates, surprised to be placed under arrest. Amihan was willing to forgive her youngest sister, but Danaya, who denies committing the crime, refuses to ask pardon for something she did not do. Attempting to assassinate the queen warranted death, and Danaya would bravely give up her life only the queen herself took it. Amihan could not bring herself to strike her sister dead, and when Pirena volunteered to take over the task, Amihan spared Danaya from the death sentence, and banished her from Lireo instead.
Alena eventually regains her memory, but the odd thing is that she now does not remember what happened after she fell unconscious in the forest while grieving over Ybarro's death. Amihan had the grace to accept that Ybrahim is better off with Alena, so she tells her Ybarro is alive, and tried to be happy when the lovers are reunited.
As fate would have it, Danaya would stumble through the Asnamon portal and discover that the Lira living in Lireo is not the daughter of Amihan, for the real heir to the throne was kidnapped and brought to the world of mortals by Pirena.
Even before Danaya would return to Encantadia bringing the real Lira with her, Amihan would begin to suspect that her Lira is not her real daughter. It all started when Alena was disturbed that Lira's singing voice could not move her as it should, when Alena herself gave the gift of voice to Lira when she was newly born. At Imaw's advice, Amihan used a magic dagger to test if she and the girl would share any wound received from it. They did not. Next, Amihan brought out the flower that bloomed the moment her daughter was conceived. According to Imaw, the flower should reflect the health of the child it was conceived with. To Amihan's dismay, the flower was wilting although right in front of her stood a very healthy Lira.
Apparently, King Hagorn of Hathoria crossed the portal between worlds to do what Pirena could not - kill the real daughter of Amihan. Amihan would eventually confirm that the girl she calls Lira is not her real daughter, and Pirena would show her true colors. An enraged Amihan declares war against Hathoria.
Amihan did not know that Pirena already had the allegiance of some of her soldiers and with their help, she lost her kingdom to Pirena who immediately crowned herself queen of Lireo. Pirena would imprison her and force her to give up the jewel of air.
Danaya would come back to Encantadia bringing the real Lira with her. On the other hand, Pirena's daughter, who had taken on her real name of Mira once she discovered her identity, exiled herself in the world of mortals. Lira would find herself Pirena's captive before she would have a chance to meet Amihan.
Eventually, Amihan and Lira would escape Lireo under Pirena's rule. Once free, she led the loyal forces in exile. Ybrahim would offer them refuge in what remained of the castle of Sapiro. Amihan would make Sapiro her headquarters for the duration of the war.
Amihan would lose Alena once more when she was captured by the Hathors and given to the renegade Hitano in marriage. Ybrahim would meet Alena in a dream, but he did not know that Alena arranged it in order to conceive his child before her marriage to Hitano is consummated. Neither Ybrahim nor Amihan knew about Alena's escape, the birth of her child, her use of power to speed up the child's growth from boy to young man in days, making her son immune to any known weapon in Encantadia, and her transformation into a flower as the last of her strength slipped away. Pirena would be the first to realize who the young man was, and lost no time in using the gifts his mother bequeathed on him.
Learning of Cassiopeia's prophecy that the real Lira would save Encantadia and become its queen, Amihan reluctantly allowed her daughter to embark on a journey towards Devas, accompanied by Danaya, to seek help. On this journey, the two would come across a young man who blocked their path. Unknown to them, this is Kahlil, Alena's son who is now following Pirena's orders. Danaya would kill him and upon examination of his body, realize that he bears the mark of the sang'gres.
Danaya would go back to Sapiro carrying the dead young man's body with her. At almost the same time, Ybrahim brought Alena home. He had discovered the spell that turned his beloved into a flower and broke it. What should have been a happy reunion between sisters turned into tragedy when Alena recognized the dead young man as her son. Mad with grief, Alena challenged Danaya to a duel and Amihan could not prevent it. When Danaya refused to kill her when she lost, Alena left Sapiro and wandered the forest alone.
Lira would come back from Devas with a mission to unite the four daughters of Mine-a. Amihan would not know of this mission as Lira was forbidden to disclose it until it had been fulfilled. It would therefore exasperate Amihan why Lira would endanger herself trying to woo back both Pirena and Amihan. By this time, Pirena had lost her crown and Lireo was fully under Hathoria's control.
Ultimately, at the conclusion of Encantadia, Amihan fulfills the prophecy by bestowing the crown of Lireo to her daughter, Lira. However, the latter immediately abdicates the throne, instead choosing to follow her heart and be with the mortal Anthony. Amihan gives Lira her blessing, but however declines to resume the queenship of Lireo, which eventually goes to her sister Danaya.
At the conclusion of the whole Encantadia series, she fights at the Adamyan front in the last war of Encantadia. She faces Ether's cronies with the help of her father Raquim and kills Ether thus returning Danaya's jewel to its rightful owner. She attends both of the coronation ceremonies of Armea and Cassandra. She is the one who blesses Armea in the coronation. She and her sisters mysteriously disappeared, leaving Encantadia to be ruled and guarded by their descendants Armea, Cassandra and Arman. She like her other sisters have become the stuff of legend as the trilogy ended and many claimed to see the four elemental Sang'gres playing in the sky.

Family affiliation

Amihan is the second among the four daughters of Ynang Reyna Minea. Pirena is her older sister while Alena and Danaya are her younger sisters. Her father was Raquim of Sapiro who was killed by Hathors led by Hagorn. She also gave birth to Princess Lira whose father is Ybrahim of Sapiro. She is the grandmother of Cassandra.

Personality

Amihan is the mother-figure among the Sang'gres. Like her mother Mine-a, she has a soft heart for those she loves, especially her family. This quality of hers has often been abused by others, especially Pirena. She is regal and majestic, often exhibiting a queenly aura of power and nobility. She is, in a way, the anti-thesis to the wild and ferocious Pirena. Though she is fierce in battle, she is the warm heart of the family of Sang'gres. She is the wisest and most caring of the Sang'gres, often acting like the eldest sister, even though she's the second-born daughter.

Powers and Abilities

  • Paglalaho
The primary form of transportation of Sang'gres, Amihan shared the ability to teleport to any place, or be with any person, at will. However, there are 2 limitations to this ability. First, it cannot be used when a Sang'gre is bound, chained, or magically imprisoned. Second, it cannot be used to teleport from Encantadia to the Human World or vice versa.
  • Bilocation
Shown towards the end of the first part of the saga, in a near death experience after being stabbed by Asval with the Kabilan, Amihan willed herself to be outside the scope of fate so as to prevent her imminent death. This caused the lines on her palm to disappear, which means she is now in control of her own destiny. As a result, Amihan inadvertently caused changes in her environment by mere utterance of her will, which included acquiring a new ability of creating a kambal-diwa named Aera. Aera, being an extension of Amihan’s psyche, has all of the Sang’gre’s emotions, memories, and skills, but limited access to the powers of the Brilyante ng Hangin. This allowed Amihan to be in 2 places at once, which she greatly needed when looking for Danaya while fighting the final battle on the Sapirian Front at the same time.
  • Basbas ng Hangin
Destined to be the keeper of the Brilyante ng Hangin, Amihan received the Gift Of Wind upon birth that allows her to tap into the powers of the Brilyante, granting her the ability to manipulate the movement of the wind, creating powerful cloud-blasts, and levitating in air. Similarly with Pirena, she used her elemental abilities as her primary arsenal in warfare.

Weapons

  • Arkrey
Arkrey is the name of the sword wielded by the brother of Queen Avria of Hera Andal who went by the same name. Upon the fall of Etheria, Prince Raquim acquired this sword and became his primary weapon. Witnessing the death of her father from the hands of Hagorn, Amihan vowed that she will use the same sword to avenge his father’s death.
  • Brilyante ng Hangin
This blue gem was created when Ynang Reyna Cassiopea cleaved the Brilyante ng Buhay using the Kabilan into 4 independent gems that correspond to each element-- Brilyante ng Apoy, Brilyante ng Hangin, Brilyante ng Tubig, and Brilyante ng Lupa, to prevent the warring clans of Hathorians and Mulawins.

The wielder of the Brilyante ng Hangin gets full access to the gem and can use it to its fullest potential. Whoever holds the Brilyante has control over the Basbas ng Hangin and is able to create or summon wind at will. On top of this, the wielder is able to bestow the Basbas ng hangin to anyone she wishes to. Due to this, both Lira and Cassandra had the limited ability to use the element of Wind when Amihan was keeping the Brilyante.

Aside from its control over the element of wind, the Brilyante has the power to locate and summon any object or entity in Encantadia to the presence of its wielder. However, this power can only work within the world Encantadia and cannot affect those from the other side of the Asnamon tree.

Amihan and the Brilyante ng Hanging
Brilyante ng Hangin The jewel grants its owner with the power to control the wind. If the beholder has this power, its owner's strength is heightened and diversified, enabling the person to control air, wind and coldness. In this sense, the beholder can change air currents, conjure oxygen in areas without it and transform into air, This wind is sometimes used to send messages to other people.
The air jewel can also be used to detect the existence of beings by tracing the sound of their breaths. Amihan used this power twice: first, to find Alena after the latter gave birth to Khalil; and second, to confirm the safety of Cassandra who ventured out with Wahid, Apek, and Wantuk, to Devas

  • Alena — the third of Mine-a's four daughters and the Keeper of the Water Gem. A pure-blooded Diwata, Alena is in possession of the most distinct power in Encantadia: a beautiful yet powerful voice that can soothe, hypnotize and destroy beings. She is also the Sang'gre who is most in touch with her emotions. However, her being in tune with her feelings is also her greatest weakness. Unlike her sisters, she never desired to be Queen. A romantic, all that she wanted was to fall in love, and fell in love did she. She found her match in Ybarro (Ybrahim), the long lost prince of Sapiro, who has since their first meeting never let her out of his sight. But Hitano, a Royal Guard, is also in love with her, making things more complicated. At the height of the raging battle between Lireo and Hathoria, Hitano took Alena as his wife (Alena accepted) much to Ybarro's horror. Before their union was consummated, Alena met Ybarro in a dream and had a child with him: Kahlil. From the very beginning, love served as the chief driving force in Alena's life, but it was also because of this love that the kind and loving Sang'gre went through a lot of sufferings that eventually lead her to become spiteful of Bathala and bitter towards her sisters. But the heart will always find its way home, and Alena eventually found her way back to her family's waiting arms. Her personal weapon is the Spear.

Alena

Karylle as Alena in GMA Network's Encantadia

Alena ("The Most Beautiful") is a fictional character from the Filipino telefantasyas -Encantadia, Etheria, and Encantadia: Pag-ibig Hanggang Wakas. Alena is the third daughter of Mine-a and is the guardian of the water jewel. She is by nature a kind-hearted person and is the most romantic among the four sisters.

Filipina singer-actress Karylle plays the role of Alena in the series.

The name Alena may have been derived from the Tagalog word alon meaning "wave", underscoring the connection to water, it is also a common first name in the Czech Republic.

Character background

The early years...

Young Alena with the kind pashnea, Awoo.

Sang'gre Alena never desired to be queen, all because she knew what her mother had to sacrifice in the name of her duty for Lireo. It is ironic how she's the sister who suffers the most hardships despite the fact that she doesn't even crave for power. This has led her to be indifferent to Bathala, knowing very well that the deity does not seem to favor her.
Princess Alena smelling a flower.

The prettiest among the sisters captured the heart of a common warrior named Ybarro. He was cocky, and it earned her ire at first. However, he was persistent in wooing her and soon Alena realized she was slowly falling in love with him already. But their love story was not to be without an antagonist. That role easily fell in the hands of Hitano, one of Lireo's soldiers.

Hitano had loved Alena for a long time, although she was unaware of the soldier's feelings. After he overheard Alena talking with her handmaiden Muyak about Ybarro, his jealous nature finally overtook his personality. This led him to bargain with Alena's sister, Pirena, who at that time was already planning to overthrow Amihan from her throne.
Luck was on their side. Pirena managed to trick Alena into giving up the water jewel and instructed Hitano to take her sister away from Lireo. Using her shapeshifting powers, Pirena managed to convince Amihan and Danaya that their sister was already dead. Distraught, the remaining sisters gave Alena a burial fit for a Sang'gre.

A few years later

Alena is still held captive by Hitano. She has no memory of her life as a royalty in Lireo. While living in the forests of Encantadia, they go by their assumed names Berdano and Akesha. For many episodes it seemed as if the sang'gre was forever doomed to a life of captivity. Thankfully, Banak and Nakba spotted her in the forest one day. The two Adamyans then reported it to Danaya who was quick enough to gather some soldiers to rescue her sister.
The queen was overjoyed when Danaya presented their long-lost sister to her. Alena had still not completely regained her memories, but at least she now recognized her sisters. Hitano attempted to kidnap her again when he escaped, but the princess fought him. Her skill as a warrior had finally returned.

Alena's sisters attempted to figure out what happened to her and the water jewel all these years. By using Imaw's cane, the sisters saw Bathala ask for the jewel as Alena fainted after surrendering it. Unknown to them, it was actually Pirena's ruse all along. She pretended to be the deity in order to acquire the jewel from her sister.
But Danaya wasn't convinced. She told Amihan of her plans to go to Deva (New Age)|Devas with Alena and ask Bathala himself why he took the water jewel. The queen herself was worried. At that time she had already met Ybarro in person and realized he was actually the father of her child. Knowing very well that this was actually the man Alena loved with all her heart, the thought of her sister's memory returning confused her sense of judgment.

Hours before a trip to Devas, Pirena quickly approached her and blew something in her face which made her sleep. She now talks to the jewel of water to give her back her memory of her past and everything in her life. After a sleep she approaches Alena and tells her that she will remember nothing but the time Bathala asked her to give up the jewel of water. She now goes to Ybarro to find out what's happening. Alena and Ybarro are now reunited.
In Encantadia, she notices that Amihan and Ybarro seems to have such a strong bonding. She gets suspicious about this and gets jealous. At a confrontation when Pirena and the Hathors manage to invade Lireo, Pirena lies to Alena, telling her that Amihan and Ybarro have a romantic relationship hidden from her. She comes between the battle of Pirena and Amihan and stops Amihan from killing Pirena. Pirena tells her that Amihan is a traitor and that she has taken Ybarro from her. Amihan tells her that she would never do that because she loves Alena very much and only wants to be with her daughter. Alena sides with Amihan and defeats Pirena.

Family affiliation

Sang'gre Alena

Sang'gre Alena

Alena is the third among the four daughters of Ynang Reyna. Pirena and Amihan are her older half sisters, while Danaya is her younger full sibling. For a long time, Alena and Danaya did not know the identity of their father. All they knew of him was that he had been killed by Hathors when they were still young. In the Etheria finale,
however, Alena and Danaya's father was revealed to be Enuo, a Diwata healer, who had been destined to sire daughters with Mine-a because of his kindness. As with Pirena and Amihan, Alena and Danaya cherished having met their father; though they were not aware of their relationship at the time, Enuo had tended to the two sisters' wounds after they were injured fighting Avria.
After being forced to marry Hitano in order to save Ybarro's life, Alena found a way to spite her new husband. She conceived after meeting the love of her life in a dream. Soon, she managed to cast a curse on Hitano saying her child would be the one to slay him for mistreating her all these years. After staging a daring escape, Sang'gre Alena managed to give birth all alone in the forest. Her child was a healthy baby boy whom she named Kahlil.
Kahlil was a newborn Sang'gre fated not to experience childhood. Since his mother had been weakened by her escape and childbirth afterwards, he received her blessings in order to survive once she is gone. Alena was wise enough to bless the infant with invincibility, in a way that no weapon in Encantadia can ever hurt him. Kahlil was also blessed with the skill of a great warrior, a fitting trait since his father had been considered as one also.
In the third installment of the series, Encantadia: Pag-ibig Hanggang Wakas, Queen Alena and King Ybrahim were blessed with a second child. A beautiful girl they named Armea.

Evading Devas

Still bitter over Bathala's obvious neglect of her pleas, Alena called out to the Spirit of the Water to help her. Butterflies had already began hovering above her and it was a sign of death for people in Encantadia. In the nick of time, Agua appeared and helped her. She turned Alena into a flower while she was recuperating and gathering her strength. The water fairy then made a request that as a flower, she be allowed to spew poison at her enemies while emitting fragrance to her loved ones. Agua gave her a condition. She will turn into a diwata once more if she'd receive a kiss of true love. Seeing that she had no other choice, Alena agreed to the bargain. It was, after all, much better than going to Devas. She still had a child to come back to. Once she recovers, her first agenda would be to find Kahlil.

A few days have passed and Ybarro kisses Alena and Alena is now back healed and looked like she has had a long day of cleaning. Alena now reunites with Ybarro and Amihan. The three of them come to Lireo to face Pirena asking where her son is. Pirena told her that she asked Kahlil to do a mission. She faces Pirena and defeats her with the help of her anger and focus. The three of them now leave Lireo.
After some time, Danaya comes back alone leaving Lira to got to Devas and with her was the body of the son of Alena, Kahlil. Alena was furious and angry with Danaya because Danaya killed Kahlil because he was about to kill them all. Alena challenges Danaya to a fight and defeats her. Danaya refuses to fight and lost the battle willingly and was willing to die for Alena but Amihan blocks the spear to stop the sisters' fight. Alena now leaves Adamya and stays alone in the forest with no one with her, no sister, no love and no son.

Jewel of Water reunited with the Water Goddess

Pirena approaches Alena to team with her against Amihan, Danaya and Lira. Alena accepts the proposal in one condition which is the jewel of water back. Pirena gives it to Alena but she fell for Alena's trick. Pirena left sad and angry. While Amihan goes to Lireo to defend her kingdom from the Hathors but not to side with Pirena, Alena visits her and strikes her with her power that was once again strengthened. Amihan refuses and wants to hug her sister. Alena lets it rain and leaves Amihan. She now visits Danaya and again refused to fight.

Marriage

Alena married Ybrahim and it served as the culmination of everything the couple had been through since the start of their undying love for each other. Alena would have been Queen of Lireo after Pirena renounced her right subsequent to Lira's abdication in favor of a life with her mortal beloved, but Ybrahim interrupted and took the hand of Alena for marriage making her his queen consort. They were married in the shorelines of Sapiro, blessed by the bride's sisters and his father Armeo who had been granted a temporary visit from Devas just for the ceremony.

Death

This all starts with the threats of Hagorn on her gem of water. Hagorn first uses Armea as bait to get the gem of water but leads to events that she would dread. Ybrahim goes to save Armea and fights Ether. Arman joins the battle but then gets a threat to his life. As Ether was about to stab Arman, Ybrahim had brought him out of the way and got stabbed by Ether's poison blade that not even the kalasag could protect him, thus killing him. After Ybrahim was brought to Devas, Alena and the council accuses Arman for this betrayal and sentences Arman to death. Odessa saves Arman and pleads to Alena that Arman be recognized as a true Sapiryan but doesn't and sentences Arman yet again to death and kills Odessa. She then makes Arman take the paternity test that leads her to know that Arman is a true son of Ybrahim. She does not accept it at first but is consoled by Ybrahim's memory. Hagorn comes to Sapiro to get Arman back to their side but Arman disagrees and it leads to a fight between Arman and Alena versus Hagorn and Sari-a. Alena and Arman are defeated causing Alena to choose between her gem of water and the son of Ybrahim who is about to be killed by Sari-a. She gives Hagorn the gem of water and her three sisters orb into the scene just as Hagorn kills her. She then meets Ybrahim in Devas and kisses him. She is also reunited with her son, Kahlil. As she said to the council, the throne should rightfully be Armea's thus making her queen. After being allowed by Emre, she leaves Devas to see the coronation of Cassandra where Armea replaced her as the holder of the jewel of water.

Like the rest of her sisters, she becomes the stuff of legend as people claim to see them in the sky.

Powers

  • Teleportation - commonly seen among members of the royal family, a sang'gre can only teleport if they know the place where they're going.
  • Sonokinesis - Alena was born with the power to charm anyone with her amazing voice. However, there is more to this than meets the eye. She can either put anyone on a trance or kill them at will using her voice. This ability is telempathic in nature and can only affect living individuals like a psychic shockwave. Her powers do not have any effect on physical objects.
  • Hydrokinesis - Being connected to the Brilyante ng Tubig, Alena was born with ability to manipulate the movement of any body of water if she desires. When she received the jewel from her Ynang Reyna Mine-a, her powers gradually increased to the point of being strong enough to summon a storm.
  • Energy Projectiles - Alena is capable of generating a green blast of pure energy and use water projectiles to attack her enemies.
  • Transformation - Alena is capable to transform to her warrior gear.

Weaponry

  • Spear - Though Alena, as well as her sisters, is skilled in the use of any instrument of war, her weapon is a spear similar to that used by the soldiers of Lireo. Towards the end of Etheria, this spear evolved in form via the blessing of Bathala.
  • Brilyante ng Tubig - Alena is the destined keeper of this jewel. When she was born, she could already tap into its powers. The jewel gave Alena more control over her powers that eventually allowed her to raise impenetrable walls and domes made of water. She lost the jewel to Hagorn to save the life of Arman. After Pirena recovered the jewel, it was passed on to her daughter Armea, along with her spear and battle outfit.
  • Danaya — the youngest of Mine-a's four daughters, Danaya is the Keeper of the Earth Gem. Unlike Amihan and Pirena who are only half-Diwata, she is a pure-blooded Diwata, and it is only her and Alena who have the same father. Though the youngest, Danaya is the most fearless and level-headed among all the Sang'gres. She knows all of Lireo's laws by heart, and while she may be extremely stubborn, she's one to do things by the book. As the youngest, she also has childish tendencies - evident with how she bickers with Aquil and Lira, over even the smallest things. As the kind who never lets her emotions rule her, Danaya projects a tough and uncaring aura even though she's already breaking down inside. Also, she is in love with Aquil but will not let her feelings be known - at least not vocally. It is also believed that she may not die if she does not want to, as she can transform herself into any animal or plant she wishes in subterfuge. As the guardian of the Earth, her weapon of choice is close to nature. She wields two wooden sticks and specializes in arnis. She is also skilled in hand-to-hand combat.

Danaya

Danaya.jpg
Danaya is a character from the Filipino fantasy television series Encantadia and Etheria produced by GMA Network. Danaya is the one of the four elemental Sang'gres and is the keeper of the Jewel of Earth. She later became the queen of Lireo.
Filipina actresses Diana Zubiri and Valerie Concepcion played Danaya in the Encantadia TV series and Mulawin the movie, respectively. Robbie Tan of Seiko Films didn't allow his contract star Diana Zubiri to appear as Danaya in Mulawin: The Movie. GMA Network and Regal Films opted to cast Valerie Concepcion as Danaya instead.
The name Danaya may be a play on "Diana", which is the name of both the actress who originated the role as well as the goddess of the hunt in Roman myth, Diana, who is similarly associated with wild animals and forests.

Character background

Danaya is the daughter of Minea and Enuo. She is a full blooded Diwata. Alena is her real sister while Amihan and Pirena are her half sisters
Danaya grows up into a strong-willed, rebellious, albeit militaristic woman with a soft spot for nature. The time came when it was time to change the queen. Minea, after having consulted her advisors, told her daughters to prepare for the test. Pirena later overheard Minea talking with Imaw that she wish either of her three daughters, excempting Pirena, would become queen. She still told some about Pirena's "blood" (she still didn't talk about it clearly and it even mystified wise Imaw) and that she is sorry that Pirena won't be able to fulfill her ambition but Pirena was already gone this time, angry and hurt with questions on her mind.
The test for the sister is to fight a cloaked warrior. The goal is to take the "key" the warrior holds. The cloaked figure wear a white cloak with a brown face covering (the attire is, intriguingly, of a common Sapirian warrior) and wears a key as a pendant. Danaya went first and it was her battle that was most difficult (she even stepped on traps). Defeated, she went home sulking. Before dying, Inang Reyna gave Danaya the Brilyante ng Lupa and gave a magical gift to Amihan's daughter, Lira, that she will never be harmed against Pirena's powers. Danaya and Alena went on a journey to Devas after no consent from Amihan to retrieve the Brilyante ng Tubig from Bathala(Pirena disguised herself as Bathala to take the brilyante), by using one of the airships, but was attacked by the Hathors and had to escape and go back to land, Danaya was Attacked by Pirena and had to heal herself using Pirena disguised herself as Danaya and making an attempt on Amihan's life, which leads to the real Danaya's exile. At first Amihan won't believe but she would later changed her mind. Pirena's plan would have been foiled when Aquil told Amihan that it was possibly Pirena, remembering an event when someone, disguised as him, entered the treasury and stole the fire gem. However when they looked up Pirena in her room, they found her (whoever it was) peacefully sleeping with her sister Alena.

Danaya's Mission in the Human World

Danaya, who has been wrongfully banished from Lireo comes upon the Tree of Asnamon, and, seeing Mira open the portal, decides to follow. She lands in Carmen's backyard and first meets Mila, but is soon driven out by Carmen and her stooge. Because she is not familiar with the mortal world and its laws, she strikes people who anger her for whatever reason and thus gets into a couple of run-ins with the police. In the mortal world, she meets another diwata, Muyak (who has been gone for something like 18 years to watch over Mila). At first, Danaya doesn't recognize Muyak, but she soon remembers Muyak and they set off on a quest to find Mila.
A bullet wound, a trip to the hospital, and a failed attempt to convince Mila she is a diwata later, they decide to go back to Encantadia but realize that the portal is closed. They are stuck in the mortal world. Later on,
Hagorn arrives in the world of the humans. He knocks Mila unconscious. Danaya arrives and asks the Hathors to stop. The Hathors attack Danaya but she fights back and manages to kill them. She sees Mila being carried by Hagorn. Hagorn and Agane orb out. Danaya also orbs out. She appears in front of Muyak and tells her the bad news. Muyak insists that they look for Mila but Danaya said that Muyak should stay and she will look for Mila herself.
Leaves twirl around Danaya and they brought her to Mila's location. Danaya arrives in a forest. She sees Mila lying on a bench. She walks toward Mila but fire suddenly encircles Mila. Hagorn and Agane orb in. Hagorn raises his sword right in front of Mila. He asked for the Earth Gem in exchange for Mila's life. Danaya was having second thoughts about giving her gem. She summons the Earth Gem but then Avilan glides in and takes the Earth Gem. Right at the moment, Hagorn stabs Mila in the chest. Danaya cries for Mila but Hagorn orbed out. Danaya was unable to come near Mila for she is surrounded by fire.
Danaya was beside Mila. She was asking Avilan to return the Earth Gem but nothing happened. She then gathers plant medicines to save Mila's life.
Avilan arrives at Avila and tells Dakila and Bagwis that Danaya and Lira are in danger.
Meanwhile, butterflies appear where Danaya and Lira are. Danaya begs for Bathala's help. She try to keep the butterflies away from Mila.
Dakila and Bagwis were searching for Danaya and Mila.
Danaya transfers Mila to get her away from the butterflies. Then there was a sudden gush of wind. Dakila and Bagwis arrive. Danaya runs to them and asks for help. Bagwis carries Mila.
In Avila, Mila is getting worse every second. Butterflies suddenly arrive. Dakila tells Danaya that Mila has left them and for Devas. Danaya went to Mila and asked her to wake up. Danaya couldn't accept what happened to her niece. The Mulawins gave tribute to the Sang'gre that has just died. Danaya, grieving, tells Dakila about Mila. She said that her life has been wasted. Dkila tells Danaya that she should be thankful because she got time to spend with her niece. Dakila tells Danaya that there is still another way to bring back Mila's life. Dakila tells Danaya that an encantado named Mercurio might be able to help them. Mercurio is imprisoned in Halconia and is guarded by a Ravena. Danaya tells him that she will go to Halconia immediately. Upon hearing this, Bagwis asks to go with Danaya.
Bagwis carries Danaya on their flight to Halconia. They finally arrive in Halconia. Danaya suggested that they should split up to look for Mercurio faster. Bagwis refuses but Danaya walks away from him. Danaya finds an encantado who was caged. She wonders where the Ravena guarding Mercurio was but calls Bagwis and tells him that he found Mercurio. Mercurio asks Danaya to leave but she suddenly hears a growl. The Raven appears and fights Danaya. The Ravena managed to unarm Danaya of her weapons but she picks two bones from a skeleton and uses them as arnis. Danaya beats the Ravena and turned to Mercurio. She tried to unlock the cage but her opponent rose up and sucks Danaya's energy. Danaya gets weaker and weaker. Bagwis attacks the Ravena. The Ravena lets go of Danaya. Bagwis and the Ravena fight. He manages to kill the Ravena.
Danaya and Bagwis free Mercurio and Danaya asks him if he has the cure for Mila. Mercurio gives a box to the Sang'gre and Danaya thanks him but he thanks her instead. Mercurio leaves away in a flash. Danaya puts her hand on Bagwis and they orb away to Avila.
Danaya and Bagwis finally arrive in Avila. Dakila asks them to hurry because there are more butterflies by the second. Danaya spread dust from the box given by Mercurio over Mila's body. After a while, Danaya tells Dakila that nothing seems to happen. Danaya was afraid that everything that they have done was wasted.
Danaya, together with Bagwis and Dakila, goes back to Mila's room to find that the butterflies are getting lesser. Danaya finds hope for Mila. Mila's hand slightly moves. She wakes up to see Danaya. She said that she must've gone crazy, seeing the creatures around her. Danaya gives Mila something to drink. Lira insists of leaving but Dakila tells her to rest first. Lira stood up. Danaya tells her about who she really is.
Danaya talks to Bagwis and tells him that she has lost her Earth Gem. He asks how this happened and Danaya tells him about Avilan.
Danaya asks Mila what was going on and Mila agreed to go with her to Encantadia to meet her mother. Danaya tells Mila that if she wants to go to Encantadia, she must forget about Anthony. Danaya tells her that as a future queen, she must never fall in love. Mila said that she only wanted to go to Encantadia to meet her mother but she doesn't want to be a queen.
Bagwis finds Danaya worried. Danaya tells him that she is worried. He asks if he feels danger and she said yes.
Bagwis and Danaya accompany Mila to Anthony's house. Mila and Anthony talk. Later, Mila told Anthony that she has to leave. Anthony insists of going with her but Danaya walks behind him and knocks him unconscious. Mila asks her why she did that but Danaya said that Anthony is a distraction and insists that she can't love Anthony. Danaya insisted that they should leave before someone sees them. They hear Carmen and they leave but Lira bends down to get Anthony's necklace.
In Avila, Lira looks at the Anthony's necklace. Bagwis asked her if it belongs to the guy in the mortal world they just visited. She said it belongs to Anthony. She said that it is as if that Danaya has a heart of stone. Bagwis said that Danaya is just abiding the rules of Lireo. Danaya, just outside the room, hears all this.
Danaya and Dakila are talking when suddenly, an eagle landed. It communicated with Dakila. It was Avilan. It said that Danaya should go to his grave in Avila. Bagwis would take them to Avilan's grave.
They reach Avilan's grave and Danaya starts digging. Mila wanted to help but Bagwis stopped her. Danaya, seeing that Mila and Bagwis were doing nothing, called Bagwis and asked for help. Bagwis said that she should work alone because she was the one summoned by Avilan. Lira and Bagwis smile at each other.
Danaya, still digging, was getting tired. She said the job would be easier if she had the gem of earth.
A glow comes from Avilan's grave. Danaya finds the medallion. She shows it to Bagwis and Mila.

Finding Danaya's Brilyante

Upon returning to Encantadia, she soon found out what has happened in Lireo. That Amihan is held captive while Pirena and the Hathors rule over Lireo. Bagwis returns to Avila, telling Danaya that help would come from the Mulawins if the Diwatas needed it. Lira then escapes from Danaya to look for her mother, Amihan.
Danaya later finds Amihan(Hitano helped her escape due to a deal made by Alena) with Banak and Nakba surrounded by Hathors. She along with her sisters fight and defeat the Hathors and go to the Mandirigmas camp where the surviving Lirean soldiers and Mandirigmas were hiding.
To retrieve Lira from Lireo, Danaya calls the Mulawins for help. After fighting the Hathors and making deals with Pirena, the Diwatas and Mulawins failed to retrieve Lira.
Danaya soon realized that the Pashnea started dying, and that she had feared what has happening to Encantadia. By reason that the Brilyante ng Lupa was lost, the plants and animals started to die.
She then went to the human world with Avilan to retrieve her Brilyante. She went to the sea and used a spell to create a bubble around her so she can freely breath and travel the ocean. While looking for her gem, she met a dolphin that helped her search for the brilyante. Pirena found out about this and sent a Water creature with the use of the Brilyante ng Tubig to prevent from finding the lost gem. Danaya and the dolphin both attacked and defeated the water creature and found the brilyante. She immediately went back to Encantadia, finding out that all the animals and plants are alive and well once more.

Romantic Involvement

Aquil, the deceased head of the army of Lireo, was Danaya's love interest. They were teased by Apek and Wantuk when they hug and flirt with each other. Later on, Lira tricked Danaya into saying "I love you" to Aquil. Lira told Danaya that it was something a girl says to a boy if she hates him.
After being revived Aquil again showed his love for Danaya, and after her reign, Danaya and Aquil got married and had a daughter together.

Coronation

After Lira chose the path of love, thereby going back to the land of the mortals to be with Anthony, she renounced the throne and let her mother and three other Ashtis (aunt) to decide who would be the next matriarch of Encantadia. The Sang'gres and Lira all looked at Pirena who just smiled and said, "I once ruled, but the outcome was unpleasant." Then, asked Imaw who would rule next. He replied, "If Pirena refuses, Alena will be made queen." With this, Ybarro disagreed and contradicted the statement by Imaw, stating that she cannot be the Queen of Lireo because he will make her the Queen of Sapiro. And he proceeded to ask her hand by then. Lastly, the only viable choice for the title was Sang'gre Danaya, who by the way, lost Aquil in the battle against the Hathors. At first she doubted her capabilities as a queen, but with Pirena's blessing, she was encouraged and agreed to be Amihan's successor, becoming the Queen of Lireo. In Etheria, she will lead the other three sang'gres in battle against their new enemies - the three Etherians who came out of the portal in Episode 138. During the last war of Encantadia, she faces her gabay-diwa, Sari-a at the Lirean front. She gained the jewel of earth back as Amihan had killed Ether and Sari-a apologized to her panginoon (Lord in Filipino) because of what she had done to Encantadia. In a few years, she renounced her throne to Lireo to Cassandra and reunites with Aquil, her love and her daughter.

Family Affiliation

Danaya is the fourth and youngest daughter of Minea. Pirena and Amihan are her half sisters while Alena is her full-blooded sister. Her father was Enuo, a rebel diwata who knows much about Encantadia's plant life and vegetation. He is also excellent in curing diseases or wounds,

Personality

Hindi kumikilala ng dugo ang ambisyon. - Danaya on Pirena

The youngest of Minea's daughters and the keeper of the Jewel of Earth, Danaya is a feisty and cunning fighter whose loyalty to the throne and laws of Lireo is absolute. Because of her relative youth, she is prone to mischief and petty arguments (especially with her niece Lira), but always has her heart (and mind) in the right place.

Importance in the Balance of Nature

Without Danaya, plants would wilt. Animals would die. Beings in Encantadia would weaken and would soon die. This has been experienced when she once lost the jewel of earth.

Abilities and weapons

All Sang'gres have innate abilities inherent only to the royalty of the Diwata race. These powers cannot be stripped from them and known as their primary magical skills.
  • Teleportation this is a from of teleportation common to all Sang'gres. This ability allows them to magically be transported from one place to another so as long as they know the place where they will be going. However, this power is inaccessible when a Sang'gre is physically bound.
  • Elemental Powers- destined to be the future bearer of the Brilyante ng Lupa, (Earth Jewel), Danaya has control over everything connected to it. She can summon plants to aid her in battle and can even communicate to animals. Her powers are not just limited to the Encantadia's biosphere as she can manipulate the movement of Earth, itself, causing massive earthquakes and erecting earth-made structures. However, this power can be stripped from her if the Brilyante falls into the wrong hands.
  • Transmogrification Danaya can shapeshift into form of animal or plant.
  • Flight This ability is revealed in Etheria. She can use her powers connected to the Earth to repel the force of gravity acting on her, allowing her to levitate, and at some point, even fly. This ability is manifested by a golden brown cloud appearing under her feet.
  • Healing-Sang'gre Danaya can heal any type of wound(not very deep and serious wound).
Weapons
  • Arnis sticks- Though Danaya can use swords and other arsenals as shown in Etheria when they lost their jewels, her weapon of choice are a pair of arnis sticks. As her powers correspond to the Earth, it is understandable that her weapon is something made from trees that she is affiliated with.
  • Brilyante ng Lupa- though not technically designed for battle, the jewel blesses its keeper with special abilities, which are, in the case of the Earth Jewel, the ability to heal. Danaya was born having the ability to tap into its powers and when the time came that she was tasked to be its guradian, her powers greatly increased and her connection the the earth strengthened.

Brilyante ng Lupa

Earth Jewel- The jewel grants its owner with earth-based powers. If the beholder has this power, its owner's strength is heightened and diversified, enabling the person to control the earth, vegetation and nature. In this sense, the beholder can conjure earthquakes, communicate with plants and animals, shapeshift into any flora or fauna and heal herself.

Owner History

Emre > Meno > Sapiro/Armeo > Raquim > Mine-a > Danaya > (fell into the sea) > Danaya > Avria > Ether> Danaya
Original and destined owner of the Earth Jewel = Danaya
  • Cassiopea — also known as Mata (The Eye). It was Cassiopea who claimed the land that is now known as Lireo and became its First Queen, as well as the Queen of Encantadia. As the child of the Etherian Heran Memen and his mistress - the lowly Diwata Ornia - Cassiopea emerged into a world wrought with hostility towards her mother's kind. When she was still a baby, Evades, Memen's mentor, already knew that she will be the Diwatas' luntaie (savior). Knowing that danger would keep following the child's parents, Evades takes Cassiopea in as his apprentice. Like Kahlil's, Cassiopea's growth was sped up in order for her to quickly fulfill her mission. Under Evades' tutelage, Cassiopea grew to be a wise and extremely gifted Diwata who has the ability to see the future albeit born blind. Later, when she breaks apart the Mother Gem entrusted by Bathala to the Council into the four pieces known as the Fire, Air, Water and Earth gems, she is banished from Lireo and cursed to live within the confines of the forest until the gems are made one again. While awaiting her freedom, Cassiopea collects gold from those who would seek her help.

Cassiopea (Encantadia)

Cassiopea is a character from Encantadia, a Filipino fantasy television series produced by GMA Network. Cassiopea is the founder and first ruler of the queendom of Lireo, homeland of the Diwatas (fairies). Filipina actress Cindy Kurleto played the role of the adult Cassiopea in Encantadia and its prequel series Etheria, while the young Cassiopea is portrayed by Filipina child actress Empress Schuck.
Cassiopea will reveal the future to anyone who gives her gold. She is much like Balasik in Mulawin, who wanted corn in exchange for the truth. The character borrows from two Greek mythical persons. Her name is derived from Cassiopeia, queen of Aethiopia, and her being a seer. When she utters a prophecy of the future through her mind, a sphere of magical thoughts envelopes her head and she utters the prophecy in Enchanta, language of the Encantadians. That sphere also appears when speaking in telepathy to others but speaks Enchanta when talking normally.

Character background

Cassiopea was born to Ornia, a servant Diwata and Memen, an Etherian/Diwata half-blood and husband to the Etherian Queen Avria during the golden age of Encantadia. He turned his back on his wife and daughter Minea, to run off with his true love. The shame of this betrayal, led Avria to order their deaths.
Leaving the newborn Cassiopea in the protective hands of Evades, a rogue member of Hera Sensa, the two fugitives sought refuge in the Kingdom of Sapiro.

Believing the young half-blood to be the prophesied savior of her race, Evades took the infant under his wing; not only teaching her the nuances of her powers, but also accelerating her growth.

Together with the refugees of the Great Diwata Purge, she founded the Kingdom of Lireo in the northeastern forest of Encantadia. Raquim and Mine-a were witnesses in this incident.
Though born blind, Cassiopea was gifted with premonitions-visions of the future, inheriting this from her ancestor, Esmeralda. This ability would eventually earn her the moniker "Mata" or the Eye from her fellow Diwatas.
One of these visions involved an event that would soon shake Etheria to its very foundations: She saw a dark being assassinating Ornia and Memen.

Cassiopea tried to warn her parents, who foolishly contradicted her. Later that night Animus, Andora's brother and Memen's nephew, came bearing the feared Kabilan and committed the foul deed.

This arrogant move by Etheria shocked the surrounding nations of Sapiro, Lireo, and Hathoria, setting off a chain of events that would eventually lead to the demise of the once powerful kingdom.

Cassiopea became the first queen (Ynang Reyna) of Lireo, and a member of the Council of Encantadia, along with the rulers of Adamya, Sapiro, and Hathoria.

Sometime during her reign she used the magical sword Kabilan to cleave the Hope gem, that was instrumental in the defeat of Etheria, into the four elemental gems. She did this in an attempt to save the Mulawin race from the wrath of the Hathors. This event caused her to gain the ire of Emre who cursed her with immortality and banishment from Lireo until the gem was restored.
Cassiopea, at the start of the third book, failed to attend the feast of the birth of Armea. After dreaming of the horrific return of the four Herans from the ruins of Etheria, her lines on the palm (erased after cleaving the Hope gem, much like Amihan's) came back, losing her hold in her own fate and signifying her oncoming death. She was later killed by the masked encantado hired by Ether, later on revealed as Arkrey, the traitorous Sapirian. Her mentor Evades was killed too.

Powers

Special Abilities
  • Precognition- Though Cassiopea was born blind, she is capable of seeing the future and this foreknowledge of things that are yet to come serves as her eyes.
  • Teleportation- Cassiopea is a sanggre so she can teleport herself in the place she knows and wants to go.
  • She is also capable of channelling raw energy from her body to her opponents that appears as a yellow energy blast.
  • Magic - Cassiopea was trained by Evades in the Magical Arts, teaching her that the key to this power is her mind. She is an incredibly powerful Magician, even capable of creating life (Cassandra).
  • Telepathy - She has the power to communicate with others using her mind. This ability is often manifested in a globe of light that surrounds her head when she speaks telepathically
Lira — the daughter of Ybrahim and Amihan and the rightful heir to the Lirean throne, who was secretly left in the mortal world to die. She did not, however, and grew up to fall in love with the mortal Anthony. Among her, Mira and Kahlil, she was the most blessed. From Alena, she received the gift of a beautiful voice that could soothe her mother's heart, and from Danaya, a protective shield against Pirena's powers. Like her mother, she can feel the wind's emotion. She has also exhibited powers such as lightning strikes and whirlwind. She is also known as Mila or Milagros in the world of the human beings. She tricked Danaya to say "I love you" to Aquil. Her personal weapon is the sword Avatar made by Cassiopea and a golden armor made by Danaya.

Lira (Encantadia)

Lira (known as Mila or Milagros in the mortal world) is a major character in the Philippine television series Encantadia which was aired in GMA Network from May 2, 2005 to December 9, 2005. Lira is played by Filipina actress and StarStruck Season One Ultimate Female Survivor Jennylyn Mercado.

Lira is the only daughter and sole heiress apparent to Amihan, who became Queen of Lireo and his father was King Ybrahim of Sapiro. She was hailed by her grandmother former queen Mine-a as Encantadia's luntiae or savior. She was crowned Queen of Lireo and instantaneously abdicated the throne in favor of a peaceful life in the mortal realm. She is also the mother of Cassandra.

Character background

In the first part of the story, Mira was known as Lira until the discovery of the true Lira, Mila.

Lira was born through a collective dream by her biological parents, Amihan and Ybrahim. Danaya, her aunt, blessed Lira with extraordinary powers and protection against Pirena while her aunt Alena blessed her with a beautiful voice.

Pirena knows that Lira is a hindrance to her plans. She tries to kill Lira but fails because of Danaya's blessing. Instead, she replaces Lira with her own child, Mira, and sends Lira to the human world.

The true Lira is adopted by a poor couple that names her Milagros (or "miracle" in English) because when their hut catches fire, Lira is found unharmed. Lira grows up into a pretty young woman, and comes to works as a maid for a rich family where she falls in love with Anthony, her employer's son.

After being discovered by Danaya, Lira returns to Encantadia with the help of Bagwis. Lira is reunited with her mother, Amihan, after being lost in Encantadia and imprisoned by Pirena.

Lira’s mission as Encantadia’s luntiae (savior) finally came into fruition as she has fulfilled to save Encantadia from the clutches of the Hathors when the three kingdoms of Lireo, Sapiro and Adamya triumphed in overthrowing the Hathors from its occupation of the land of the Diwatas. She successfully brought peace and tranquility in Encantadia and served her purpose in the reunification of the four elemental gemstones and their guardians.

After the war, she is crowned the new queen of Lireo but almost immediately steps down, choosing to live in the human world with her soulmate Anthony. Lira and Anthony lived a reserved and idyllic life for many years. Both of them were unfortunate not to be blessed with an offspring, but this did not deter them from their lifelong vow to be together, until the sad reality finally catches up with them: Lira's heritage as a diwata meant that her lifespan far outstripped that of a mortal such as Anthony. In the finale of the series, Anthony dies of old age while Lira is physically still at the age she and Anthony first met. Deeply bereaved, Lira returns to Encantadia and asks Cassiopea to also grant her the sleep of mortals. Cassiopea reluctantly accedes to Lira's request, much to the grief of all Encantadia, which mourns the passing of their savior. Cassiopea, however, takes strands of Lira's hair, and from these conjures a baby. Named Cassandra, she is considered Lira's daughter, being the child of her own flesh.

Afterlife

Her existence in Devas was at her own will and choice. She did this in order to be reunited with the only man she had ever loved and be with him eternally. Although this has made Lira feel gratified and contented, her happiness was short-lived and realized that she had left a daughter following her demise. While in Devas, Lira could sense that her daughter was yearning for a mother’s love, one that she herself could only give. Apart from this, Lira has sensed that Encantadia’s peace has once more been threatened by a growing number of adversaries menacing and manipulating the Sang’gres. She felt that Encantadia is in need of her help yet again and decided to ask for Emre’s approval to return to Encantadia. Regrettably, Emre turns down Lira’s appeal. Being initially hardheaded, Lira pleas again and consults Galatea, Emre’s aide in Devas and warden of the portal to Encantadia. Lira and Galatea agrees to a compromise and the latter gives the former a test. Lira failed the test however through the help of her Ilo (grandfather) Armeo, she victoriously returns to Encantadia.

Lira triumphantly returned to Lireo and was met by her parents and ash’te Danaya alongside Aquil. Her return met diverse reactions and was scolded by her parents for journeying back without Emre’s consent and approval nevertheless Aquil took the benefits of Lira’s presence as she would serve a crucial and indispensable part in their fight against their opponents. Lira assured and guaranteed her full mutual aid in their quest to rid Encantadia from Etherian suppressors. Her arrival was also met with disdain as she had found out that her daughter Cassandra had voyaged towards Devas in an attempt to bring her back. Lira however felt that it would be best if her daughter wouldn’t be around all the more that Encantadia has become a perilous milieu for Cassandra, taking note of the fact that she is safeguarded by Wahid, Wantuk and Apek. Amihan on the other hand has been anxious and fretted that Lira’s return might have something to do with the realization of the prophecy concerning Ybrahim’s demise at the hands of his own child. Amihan’s sister however shoved any truth to her assumption.

Following Cassandra’s failure to disembark in Devas, she returns to Sapiro disappointed and desolated. Lira nonetheless was thrilled upon hearing that Cassandra has arrived and soonafter she reunites with her daughter she has since longed for. Learning of Lira’s return, the Goddess Ether confronted Avria because she has overlooked and undermined Lira’s return from Devas. Ether divulged to Etheria’s Queen how Lira, Encantadia’s luntiae, has liberated the realm from its conquerors and that they shouldn’t forsook the fact that Lira could jeopardize their scheme. Lira who rescued her ash’te Pirena from Ether’s clutches fought the vengeful goddess only to be overpowered by her. Fearing of Lira’s safety, Amihan and her sisters convened and decided to send Lira and their granddaughter Cassandra to the mortal realm to seek refuge away from Encantadia and to protect Lireo's future queen. Her mother stated that Lira’s mission for Encantadia has long been fulfilled and that her duties as mother to Cassandra should be her main concern. Lira arguably declared that she could carry out both duties effortlessly, but later submitted to her mother’s wishes. And so Lira and her daughter where whisked into the mortal realm.

Family affiliations

Sang'gre Lira is a member of royal houses of two kingdoms, being the sole daughter of Amihan of Lireo and the first-born of Ybrahim of Sapiro, not to mention the only one to experience a natural growth. Her other Diwata relations include her ash'tes (aunts) Pirena, Alena and Danaya; grandmother Mine-a; and half-cousin Mira. Her Sapirian royal lineage descends from Raquim, Armeo and Meno. She is the half-sister of Kahlil, Armea and Arman, all of whom were fathered by Ybrahim. Lira is the biological mother of Cassandra, who was made from her own flesh and Cassiopea's blood. Her mortal family includes her foster parents, and her husband Anthony.

Personality

When Encantadia becomes her new home, Lira's behavior does not seem to fit to the culture of Encantadia. She sometimes speaks Taglish, which puzzled many Encantandians because they barely understand it. The culture in Encantadia is ancient and Lira, although an Encantadian herself, was raised in the modern human world. Only her mother Amihan, who had lived in the human world during her childhood, understands her modern speech and her post-20th century teen behavior.

Abilities and weapons

Special abilities
  • Teleportation — commonly seen among the Sang'gres of Encantadia.
  • Flight — like her mother, Amihan, she also uses the wind to levitate herself
  • Wind Powers — Being the daughter of the elemental goddess of wind, she has the same powers like her mother. She uses the wind to fence off opponents. She can also control the weather with the powers of wind.
  • When Lira was still in Amihan's womb, Alena blessed her to have a very beautiful voice like her own. But the power of the voices of Lira and Alena are very different. Whereas Lira's voice is used for calming others, Alena's is more powerful because she can hypnotize, kill, make anyone love her, and calm everyone. This is due to biosonar, an ability possessed by sea creatures.
  • She also has an innate protection against fire which Danaya blessed her with to protect her from Pirena.
Weapons
  • Arkrey — the long sword of Amihan's father, Raquim, but later replaced by the Avatar.
  • Avatar — the golden sword forged by Cassiopeia.

Mira (Encantadia)

Template:In-universe Mira is a fictional character in the Philippine fantasy-themed television series Encantadia which was aired on GMA Network from May 2, 2005 to December 9, 2005. Mira is portrayed by StarStruck First Princess and singer-actress Yasmien Kurdi.

Sang’gre Mira is the sole daughter of Pirena from an unknown father. She was the infant her mother switched from Amihan’s true heir, Lira. Because of this, Mira grew up and was known as Lira and was deemed as the future heiress apparent to Queen Amihan. It was noted that she has showed affection for the mortal Anthony during her self-imposed seclusion to the human world.

Character background

Mira is Pirena's one and only daughter. She was conceived by Pirena from a father whom little is known about, although it was evident that he was a Lirean soldier who was instantaneously killed by Pirena. Mira was Pirena’s implement so that she could exact revenge against Amihan after bitterly losing the queenship from her sister. Pirena switched the infant Mira from the newborn Lira so that Mira would be queen after Amihan’s reign. Since Mira has inherent fire powers, which she inherited from her mother, Danaya was quite reluctant that she was in particular Amihan’s daughter. Likewise, Alena who saw the true Lira right after being born initially took notice of the infant’s dissimilarities. But all these speculations where shoved off by Amihan’s maternal inkling and thus Mira grew up taking the identity of Lira. For a reason of not letting her daughter experience the pain that she had experienced from her own mother was also why Pirena did this. The young Sang'gre grows up exuding all the pride and attitude that comes with being the heir to the Lirean throne. Instead of being closer to Amihan, she is more likely closer to Pirena and finds her on the young Sanggre's side whenever she is being disciplined by the Queen. She soon meets a strange diwata with pointed ears, a being known only as "The Eye". The Eye tells Mira that if she decides to journey to the human world, she will not ascend the throne. This greatly troubles the young sang'gre and she forces The Eye to tell her why. The Eye tells her that she will meet a human and fall for him, which will prevent her from claiming the Lirean throne. It turns out that the "The Eye" is Cassiopeia, the first Queen of Lireo.

Determined to stop this, Mira secretly journeys to the human world and eventually meets Anthony, Lira's childhood sweetheart and falls for him at first sight. At first Mira is confused, wondering why she can't erase Anthony's face from her mind. Then she finally admits her tragic love for the human boy.

Just before the invasion in Lireo, Queen Amihan was blissfully staring at the flower representing her daughter's life and existence in Encantadia when suddenly, it faded turning into nothing but a pale-looking plant. This worried the Queen Mother but was immediately shocked to see her daughter alive and okay. The next morning passed and Amihan was awaken by a bad dream warning her about Lira which she had dreamed of several times now. Again, she was surprised to see her daughter by her side. Seeing her sister worry too much, Alena asked Mira to sing so to calm her mother down. To the third-born Sanggre's surprise, it didn't struck her heart at all. Upon knowing this by the queen, she had recalled one day when Lira was still an infant and Danaya wondered why the baby has Pirena's power. All these events gave Amihan doubts if the baby whom she thought was hers wasn't after all.

She then discovers her true parentage after Pirena succeeded in dethroning Amihan and taking over the kingdom. From this situation did she learn that she was intently switched with the bonafide Lira. Thinking that she was used for her mother's own desires, she exiles herself to the mortal world to forget the mother she disowned with rage. There in the mortal world did her feelings for Anthony intensified as well.

Even in the face of anger towards her own mother, her instinct as a child never left her. However she denied it, wanting her mother to pay. Once, the spirit of her heart was stolen by Lavanea, a diwata known to be the guard of the volcano. With Pirena to the rescue in getting her daughter's heart back, she used the chance to test Mira's heart by asking Alena to hurt her in front of the keeper. True enough, Mira's heart began to cry for a halt. Not being able to take it anymore, Mira's heart was returned. But the dilemma did not end there. Pirena still had to succeed in interacting with her dangerous offspring in order for her to be normal once again. Instinct instantly made her recognize Pirena but it was almost too late. She then dies at the hand of Asval proclaiming to her true mother that it was indeed a great honor for her to be Mira, daughter of Pirena.

Once Mira journeyed into the mortal realm, she immediately took notice of an entirely dissimilar lifestyle. Given this circumstance, Kahlil grew up never feeling his mother or his father's embrace. Kahlil was eventually taken in by Pirena, who poisoned his mind and turned him against his own sister. Because of the threat he posed to Encantadia's luntaie, Cassiopea forged a golden sword, the Avatar, to kill him but failed. Later, he is killed by Danaya to protect Lira. When Pirena brings him back to life as a "gift" to Alena, Kahlil was enraged. He stopped at nothing to attain a second death so that he may be able to go back to Devas and be at peace. In a fight that ensued between him and Hagorn, Kahlil, wounded was brought to Lireo where its monarch Queen Pirena eventually took him under her care upon seeing the unusual mark of a Sang’gre on his back. Because of it, Pirena used him as leverage in her prospect to slay Amihan’s heir, Lira, who coincidentally is Kahlil’s older half-sister. The queen took Kahlil under her tutelage and poisoned his mind turning him against Lira.
Because of the threat he posed to Encantadia’s luntiae (savior), Cassiopea forged a golden sword called the Avatar which served as Lira’s weapon and became Kahlil’s greatest weakness. In the fight that arose, Danaya used the Avatar in order to slay Kahlil and protect Lira.
Once Alena found out of Kahlil’s dreadful and horrendous demise at the hands of her full-blooded sister, she relinquished her ties from Danaya and Amihan and reverted her loyalties from them. When Alena sided with Pirena, the latter brought Kahlil back to life as a gift to her desolated sister.
Upon learning this, Kahlil was enraged, he stopped at nothing to attain a second death so that he may be able to go back to Devas and be at peace. Amihan refused to take the her in so she grew up with her ylo Ybrahim and yla Alena in Sapiro and is next in line to the throne, leaving Lireo without a heiress. Cassandra (Encantadia)

Cassandra is a fictional character from the Filipino fantasy-themed television saga Encantadia produced by GMA Network. Cassandra is played by Filipina child actress Ella Guevara. In the last chapter, adult Cassandra is portrayed by 2005 Miss International Precious Lara Quigaman.

Family affiliation

Cassandra is the daughter of Lira, and, hence, one of the Sang'gres of Lireo. She was magically born after the death of Lira. Cassiopea brought her to life using Lira's hair as well as her own blood. Cassandra is the granddaughter of Ybrahim and Amihan (Lira's parents). However, she also addresses Amihan's sisters Alena (also wife to Ybrahim), Danaya and Pirena as Ila ("Grandmother"), though they are actually her grandaunts.

History

The prophecy stated that Cassandra is the key to the return of the fallen kingdom of Etheria. Cassandra was kidnapped by an Etherian named Animus and imprisoned in a mystic hourglass. Cassandra is also the heiress to the thrones of Lireo and Sapiro.

After her abduction by Animus and two other Etherians, Cassandra was placed within the Golden Hourglass to be its source of power. Her heritage as the Last Sang'gre meant that she had the abilities to provide energy for the Golden Hourglass, which is the source of Etheria's power.

When the Jewel of the Elements was given by Emre to the four rulers of Adamya, Lireo, Sapiro, and Hathoria, the elemental powers of the Sang'gres were returned. They were able to defeat Avria, Andora, Odessa, Juvila, and Arkrey who were the guardians of Etheria's Hourglass. The Sang'gres seized the Golden Hourglass and simultaneously blasted it with orbs of energy. Cassandra appeared in front of the Hourglass unharmed and safe. She was happily reunited with her family. Avria returned to the Sang'gres accompanied by the snake goddess Ether. The Bathaluman emitted a blast of energy from her mouth, which was easily blocked by Alena. The Sang'gres then threw the Golden Hourglass in the air and again sent orbs of great power at it, destroying the source of Etheria's power. The goddess Ether disappeared, together with all the powers of the Etherians. Etheria began to crumble into dust. The Sang'gres teleported out of Avria's palace and went to the Time Portal.

Animus appeared with his two other companions to thwart the Sang'gres from leaving the Etherian time period. Alena and Danaya slayed the two companions while Amihan and Pirena fought Animus. He proved too strong for the two Sang'gres. Ybrahim returned to his senses and defeated Animus. Just as Animus was about to strike the Sang'gres once more, Cassandra sends a violet colored energy blast that throws him to the ground.

Cassandra, together with her grandmothers and grandfather, returns to the present time of Encantadia. Because of the threat of Ether, she, together with her mother, goes to the mortal realm just as Armea does. She meets up with Armea and tells her about the Sang'gre mark making Armea realize that she is also a Sang'gre.

As written in Encantadia's rich history by Arman, she grew up to become the Queen of Lireo because she was of age. Danaya gave the crown and sceptre to Cassandra. Alena, Ybrahim and Cassiopea come back to Encantadia to visit Cassandra's coronation.

Sapirians

A Sapirian of royal lineage can be identified by also the distinct marking, like the Sang'gres, but this time, on their right shoulder blades. This marking resembles the symbol of Sapiro (the gem of earth) after the cleaving of the Jewel.

Ybrahim is the only son of King Armeo and the only grandchild of King Meno and the sole heir to the fallen Kingdom of Sapiro who soon inherits the crown and restores his kingdom to its powerful rule. In the course of the saga, he stood as the Sang’gres’ defender and ally. He was the destined father of Amihan’s heir, Lira and became Alena’s consort were he had two progenies, Kahlil and Armea.

Filipino actor Dingdong Dantes plays Ybrahim.

Character background

Ybrahim was a Sapirian prince born from the royal house of Sapiro. He was the only son of King Armeo and the only grandchild of King Menno, the first 2 original keepers of the Earth Gem, from his wife Queen Asnara. At the moment when Ybrahim was still a child came the Hathors’ crusade to surmount a conquest of the entire realm of Encantadia. While his father dueled with their adversaries, a troop of Hathors managed to invade their kingdom where the young Ybrahim and his mother was, fearing for his safety, they fled and Ybrahim was ultimately entrusted to a mandirigma named Apitong, prior to his mother’s last breath.

Ybrahim, named as Ybarro by his adoptive father, grew up in the tribe of the mandirigmas or warriors. His upbringing contributed much to his great skills in battle as well as being a swordsman. Ybarro who wandered in Lireo came across the most striking diwata he had ever met, Sang'gre Alena. Determined to win her heart Ybarro stopped at nothing to get know the woman who captivated him. Since their meeting, Ybarro never took his sights out of her. Although he knew that society would never allow a royal to be with a commoner like him, Ybarro, unwavering and firm as he is was very steadfast in his love for Alena and would do all means possible just to be with her,

Unknowingly, upon the institution of Amihan as the new Queen of Lireo, Bathala handpicked Ybarro to be the father of the queen’s future heiress. He met Amihan in a dream and soon after the queen bore their child she later named as Lira. All the while, Alena and Ybarro unrelentingly stayed true to their love. But Hitano, a Royal Guard of Lireo also professes the same feelings for Alena. Hitano deemed that Alena best belonged to him considering their societal rank. Hitano plotted to kill Ybarro and left him on the brink of death, all the while thinking that he had killed his rival. Learning of Ybarro’s tragic episode, Alena was devastated and confounded. She was easily tricked by Pirena to relinquish the Water Jewel and soon after her memory was expunged and whisked by Hitano into the uplands. Leaving her sisters to believe that she died.
Ybarro returned indignant and vengeful, only to find out that Alena had died. Distraught and desolated, Ybarro mourned the death of the Alena, as he thought she had. Inadvertently, Ybarro and Amihan’s path have crossed and the latter soon realizes that it was in fact Ybarro whom she had met in her dream. Ybarro accompanies Amihan to Lireo where he is introduced to Lira, who unwittingly is Mira, Pirena’s daughter whom she switched from the real Lira. Mira’s reception of Ybarro was drastically cold, but he never seized to console his alleged daughter so as he could win her acceptance.

After Danaya divulged that Alena was indeed alive and was a captive of Hitano, Ybarro was once more reunited with Alena. This time, Alena didn’t have a clue of who Ybarro was and could not remember anything about their past. Given this circumstance, Ybarro strived to mend his emotionally confused lover, up until Pirena returned the Water Jewel to Alena, thus hit brought back her memory only to learn that Ybarro became father to Amihan’s child. Although this did not deter them from their love, as fate would have it, Ybarro and Alena were separated at the height of the Hathors’ conquest over Lireo. Hitano, yet again abducted Alena and took her as his wife, much to Ybarro’s horror. Although Alena did not truly love Hitano, she was forced to marry her, but before there union was consummated, Ybarro met her in a dream and Alena conceived their child, Kahlil, whose growth was accelerated thus turning him into a gallant and invincible warrior. During Ybarro’s seclusion with the Sang’gres, he found out of the true Lira and soon was reunited with his real daughter. As providence would play on Ybarro, he had cross paths with his son who had helped him in a brawl against the Hathors. Though Kahlil had spilled that he is in fact the child conceived by Alena from him, Ybarro was reluctant.

Ybarro persistent on his search for his true parentage met Asval, a surviving Sapirian from the fall of Sapiro, who challenged him to a brawl in exchange for information about his true identity. Ultimately, Ybarro was just tricked by Asval and that his true allegiance was really on the enemies. Ybarro found himself trapped and imprisoned in the ruins of Sapiro. He was able to unearth the Kabilan, a very powerful weapon dating to the era where Etheria was still the greatest kingdom of Encantadia. On the time of his incarceration, Raquim appeared to Ybarro and served as his Gabay Diwa or Spirit-Guide thereby teaching him how to fight more valiantly at the same time relinquishing the Kalasag, an indestructible armor Raquim used during his younger days as a warrior, to Ybarro. By being the Kalasag, a masked warrior who defended the Sang’gres from their foes, Ybarro was able to strike fear among his enemies. With the armor, Ybarro was unyielding and indestructible until his true identity was revealed to his daughter Lira. Ybarro felt that he did not need to mask himself, and that all the while he had regained his self-belief and confidence in battle.

Ybarro took refuge in Sapiro. He together with the Sang’gres and their allies extensively contrived their plans to overthrow the Hathors from Lireo and to seize Hagorn’s perilous scheme to conquer Encantadia. Ybarro led the war the Kingdoms of Sapiro, Lireo and Adamya waged against Hathoria. In the fight the ensued, Ybarro was able to slay the traitorous Sapirian Asval and the eventual defeat of the Hathors became apparent succeeding Hagorn’s death at the hands of Amihan. The aftermath of the war triumphantly brought peace over the realm of Encantadia. Ybarro married Alena and was dubbed as the new king of Sapiro. King Ybrahim rebuilt and reformed Sapiro into the mighty kingdom it once was. He ruled Sapiro alongside his queen, Alena and he became the guardian of Cassandra, Lira’s only child. Ybrahim finds out that Amihan is angry at Lira's death and Cassandra's birth, as she only reminds them all of Lira, but unlike Amihan, who is determined to keep the past where it is to spare herself the pain of Lira's death, Ybrahim prefers to visit the past to always remember his daughter. Ybrahim loves his granddaughter very much, and reads to her the scroll with Enchan script that Raquim wrote about Etheria during his time in the mortal world, The same scroll his son-in-law Anthony found and returned to Encantadia.

Several years subsequent to the reunification of the gems and restoration of peace in Encantadia, King Ybrahim was once for faced with a threat a new threat to Sapiro as a masked being had abducted Cassandra and used her to reinstitute the Kingdom of Etheria from the ashes. Because of this circumstance, the Four Keepers of the Gems must travel back in time to when Etheria still ruled in supremacy over Encantadia and the other kingdoms. Knowing the danger it brought to her wife, Ybrahim took no heed and followed them in their journey. In the course of his hasty decision, Ybrahim lost his memory upon his arrival in the past. There, he was captured by Odessa, an Etherian royalty hailing from Hera Aega. Instantaneously, the dame fell in love with King Ybrahim and had controlled his mind using her arrow, placing him under her spell to follow her biddings. Because of this, Ybrahim was called Alexus by Odessa and was bound to become her consort.
Following these events, Ybrahim sided with the Etherians and plotted the downfall of the Diwatas. Once Alena found out of Ybrahim being in the past, she planned to recover her husband from the clutches of the enemies. During Ybrahim and Alena’s confrontation, Alena beseeched him to return to her, but he denied Alena of her wish eventually threatening to kill her. But before he does so, Odessa had intervened but instead of conferring Alena he just simply took off. Since then, Ybrahim battled his thoughts and was confused, he couldn’t take Alena off his mind and that somehow there must’ve been something they have shared in the past for her to even realize who Ybrahim really is and not the Alexus he knew of himself. Incidentally, Odessa had enticed Ybrahim well enough that she was able to conceive a child from him. During the Four Sang’gres assault in Etheria and after recovering Cassandra from her captivity, Alena confronted Ybrahim pleading once more that they are his true allies, still to no effect. Without remorse Alena knocks his husband unconscious, taking him back to the present time where his memory was restored.

A year following their journey from the ancient times, King Ybrahim and Queen Alena heralded the birth of their heir, Princess Armea, in a bountiful banquet and festive revelry. For this, King Ybrahim is pleased to having an heiress to his throne. But shortly after Armea’s birth, King Ybrahim is confronted with a dreadful and appalling prophecy of his death at the hands of his own flesh and blood. His offspring will eventually usher him to his demise. Taking hold of the fact that Armea is his only living child, Ybrahim’s council of advisers took Armea and whisked her away from the Sapiro thereby thwarting the realization of the prophecy. This occurrence deeply saddened and distressed King Ybrahim, all the more Queen Alena.

Ybrahim takes in a child Pirena had found in the forest and named him Arman, who unknowingly is Ybrahim’s son from Odessa, who was revived by the Goddess Ether alongside their Etherian adversaries. Due to Avria’s scheme to seek revenge against King Ybrahim and the Sang’gres, she bestows Arman the speed of growth. Ybrahim finds Arman’s situation very atypical and unusual, nevertheless, he trains the fully-grown Arman in battle and combat as he perceives him as a new ally.

Ybrahim is a member of the royal house of Sapiro. He is the sole heir of King Armeo and his consort Queen Mayne. He is the grandson of Meno, former King of Sapiro and his Sapirian royal lineage descends from Nahq, Asval and Armeo, father of his cousin, Prince Raquim. He became father to Lira from Amihan. He and his wife Alena produced two offsprings namely Kahlil and Armea. Ybrahim also fathered Arman from Etherian royal Odessa.

Marriage

Subsequent to the Encantadian war, peace was restored and Sapiro was reinstituted as a kingdom. Ybrahim, who was heir to Sapiro ascends the throne. Meanwhile, as Queen Lira abdicates the throne in favor of a peaceful life in the mortal realm, the council of Lireo headed by Amihan and Imaw selects Lira’s successor. Pirena who was made queen before declined saying that her reign was one of the most unsuccessful. Alena who is next in line was opted to become Queen of Lireo, but Ybrahim intervened the ascension because he wanted to take Alena’s hand for marriage making her his new queen. This left Danaya as the next heir and the newly crowned Lirean Queen. Ybrahim and Alena were married in the shorelines of Sapiro witnessed by Alena’s sisters and Ybrahim’s father, Armeo who visited from Devas. Once their marriage was proclaimed, Ybrahim was invested with the crown making him the new King of Sapiro and his spouse Alena as the new Queen of Sapiro.

  • Kahlil - his first son with his wife Queen Alena. Second of the four siblings. He possessed invincibility from any form of weapon, power or attack and was a skilled warrior in weaponry and combat like his father. He was first killed by Danaya and was killed again by Aquil using the Avatar, his only vulnerability, if he didn't die he would have been Ybrahim's heir to the crown and throne.
  • Armea - third-born and second daughter with Alena. She is the heiress apparent to the Sapirian throne
  • Arman - his youngest son with Odessa. It is unknown to Ybrahim that Arman is his son until at the point of death; like Kahlil, his growth was sped up after being blessed by Avria using Ether's powers.
It seems to it that his offspring were given unique and great destinies a life tracing to their father's past. First was Sang'gre Lira at first being thrown to the world of the mortals. In the kind of life many look down at unknowing that beyond this, there is something bigger and much better in store for her. Next to her comes the only male Sanggre of Encantadia. Like his father, their mothers were forced to separate from their sons for the sake of their offspring's safety in the face of all kinds of danger. Third is Sang'gre Armea. Similar to that of his father, she grew up in the presence of thieves who in some ways, are also kind-hearted like the Mandirigmas. And finally, Prince Arman. Unknowing completely of his own identity, he is at the hands of darkness. However, like his father, blood at the side of light unstoppingly flows through his veins. With that, the softness of his heart never lets itself be the last one to control him.

Death

This all starts with Armea's kidnapping. Hagorn first uses Armea as bait to get the gem of water but leads to events that he would dread. Ybrahim goes to save Armea and fights Ether. Arman joins the battle but then gets a threat to his life. As Ether was about to stab Arman, Ybrahim had brought him out of the way and got stabbed by Ether's poison blade that not even the kalasag could protect him that leads to his death. Sapiro had a ceremony for his death and was escorted by Cassiopea to Devas where he met his father.

Personality

Ybrahim who grew up to be an adult known as Ybarro is a good-humored and persistent lad. His sly and sometimes very aggressive nature endeared him to Alena during their younger days. Although his titular societal rank in Encantadia is demeaned, it never dissuaded him from his aspiration and desire to be with the woman he loved. He exhibited a truthful and sincere liking towards Alena and persevered to the deaths to prove his worth. Ybrahim though all the toils and suffrage he had endured made him indomitable. He is an immensely agile and robust warrior and an adept swordsman in battle. He is one of Encantadia's bravest and shrewdest warriors. After being enthroned as King of Sapiro, Ybrahim ruled his kingdom with diplomacy, subtlety and discretion. He became a prudent, judicious, tactful and wise monarch making sensible decisions and showing chivalry and stance amidst turbulent times. Ybrahim was never overbearing and have not showed pomposity. Although his judgments were a subject to queries by his consort, Alena, he still opts for compromise. King Ybrahim is a reasonable and protective father especially when it comes to his eldest, Lira. And although he didn’t get the chance to spend a sensible time with Kahlil, he never failed to express how proud he is of his first-born son. Subsequent to losing Armea, Ybrahim would stop at nothing to be reunited with his heiress.

There, they would meet Cassiopeia, who declared that it is time that the Diwatas establish their own kingdom in that part of the forest which they will call Lireo. Even at his young age, he already possessed great skills in both sword fighting and swordsmanship that even Etherians fear him in battle. Once, while walking through the forest, he came across a beautiful Diwata who introduced herself as Kuesha.

His best friend is Prince Hagorn of Hathoria, bethrothed to Hera Mine-a, daughter of Queen Avria. Unknown to Raquim, Hagorn's Mine-a is the same woman he calls Kuesha. Raquim is also the original owner of the Kalasag which he later gave to his Nephew Ybrahim

  • Asval — Brother of the father of Armeo. It is still unknown how he managed to survive during the fall of Sapiro. He is currently in alliance with Hagorn, but as he also shares an agreement with Aquil, it is uncertain where his loyalties really lie. But one thing is for sure: he is willing to do everything just so he could regain Sapiro. He is very cunning and hailed as one of the architects in Etheria's fall. He also once tricked Pirena to fall in love with him. His personal weapon is the battle axe. He was killed by Ybrahim during the war between Hathoria and Lireo.

Asval

Asval is a fictional character from Encantadia, a Filipino telefantasya produced by GMA Network. Filipino actor Bobby Andrews played Asval in the original Encantadia series, while the young Asval is played by Sid Lucero in Etheria, Encantadia's prequel/sequel series.

Character background

Asval is a Sapirian prince and the third son of King Nahq, the first King of Sapiro. He carries the title, 'Ang Pinaka Matapang na Mandirigma ni Haring Armeo' (King Armeo's Bravest Warrior')

Before the fall of Etheria, Asval was the leader of the Sapirian legions. He played a vital role in hiding the fugitive lovers Memen and Ornia from the clutches of Queen Avria. All this was part of his scheme to secure greater power for Sapiro. Unfortunately his amoral stance and plans eventually led to the couple's death at the hands of Animus as he was responsible for putting them into the magic sleep which allowed the agent of Etheria to dispatch of them without a fight.

He was one of the three warriors to assassinate Animus under orders of the Council of Encantadia. The other two were Raquim and Hagorn. Animus was caught by surprise when the three assassins sneak-attacked him in his chamber. Animus was slain after the night of intimacy with his beloved Hera Juvila.

He is the grand uncle of Ybrahim and became an ally to Hagorn later in the series. He is an original member of the council of Encantadia. Among his abilities include teleportation and healing powers like other Royal Sapirians are capable of. He is known to be an excellent fighter which might probably be why he lived many years.

He wants to rule over Sapiro at all cost believing that once it regains its once full glory, he would be a great king to it. However, this too much desire led him to be in the side of darkness which makes it complicating as to where his loyalty really lie.

In the time of Pirena's reign over Lireo, he had fallen in love with her and never took no for an answer so to make her feel the same way for him. This, he was able to do. Once, he asked Pirena to let him borrow her jewel of fire to use it for the rebirth of Sapiro. Just when he thought he could finally take hold of it, Pirena said that the jewel is intended for her daughter Mira whom she wants to be its successor. With this, he, together with the forces of Hagorn attacked Pirena and gave her, her fall. He wasn't in love with her after all. All he wants is the jewel. For a reason of not bestowing this to him, they have nothing else to do but to end her reign.
However, when Pirena traveled to the past with her sisters Amihan, Alena and Danaya to save their grandniece Cassandra, she met Asval who, at that time was called Prinsipe Asval (Prince Asval). Regardless of his dark tomorrows, the young one had seemingly produced genuine affection for the diwata who, unknown to him is one royale from the future. Because of this, it is unknown if his trick on Pirena during her reign was a real one, or if love simply gave him luck in making Pirena fall for him for even just a short while, which he wasn't able to do due to her cold interaction with him during the time of Etheria.

It is still unknown how Asval managed to survive during the fall of Sapiro. He is currently in alliance with Hagorn, but as he also shares an agreement with Aquil, it is uncertain where his loyalties really lie. But one thing is for sure. Asval is willing to do anything to regain Sapiro. Ultimately, his efforts failed. During the earlier days of the first book of Encantadia, Asval challenged Ybrahim through a fight, that if he (Ybrahim) can triumph over him, he will grant him a treasure. Aside from this, Asval was testing him if he truly is the rightful heir to the kingdom. Upon seeing himself die at the hands of his grand nephew during the war against Hathoria, he had seen that he truly is the one for he had now completely defeated him. With that, he asked Ybrahim to rule over Sapiro with justice. He then looses his life. A life that was used to do everything he could ever think of just for his beloved kingdom.
  • Kahlil
  • Mayne — mother of Ybrahim and wife of King Armeo. It was her who entrusted the infant Ybrahim to the mandirigma Apitong.

Hathors

  • Hagorn — the power-hungry King of the Hathors who will do anything to win even at the cost of his own blood relative. Hides the secret of being the father of Pirena (that is because he did not recognize the child as his not as a result of love but as a result of deceivance). He is the only Hathorian who has the ability to morph in any person he wishes to be but unlike his daughter Pirena, he can only sustain it for a short time. The rightful wielder of Kabilan.

Hagorn

Hagorn is a character in the Philippine fantasy television series Encantadia and Etheria produced by GMA Network. Filipino father-and-son actors Pen Medina and Ping Medina played the roles of Hagorn in Encantadia and young Hagorn in Etheria, respectively.

Character background

Although there is little doubt about the intentions of the ruthless, Machiavellian King of Hathoria, there is a huge mystery behind his motives for wanting to conquer Encantadia.

In his youth he was to marry the young Mine-a through an arranged marriage concocted by Avria queen of Etheria. He was also best friend to Prince Raquim of Sapiro.

The father of the eldest among the four Sang'gre sisters - Pirena - is known throughout Encantadia both for his prowess in battle and his viciousness. Aided by his right-hand-woman, and adopted sister Agane and adoptive son Hitano, he wrestled, betrayed, and murdered his way to the Lirean throne and claimed lordship over all of Encantadia. He is also the owner of a powerful and enchanted sword, the Kabilan.

Hagorn succeeded his father Arvak when the latter fell under the sword of the Sapirian king Armeo during the fall of Sapiro.

He also battled Ybrahim, King Armeo's heir, many times. In those battles, Ybrahim was clad in the Kalasag, the powerful armor of Prince Raquim. Hagorn tried to use the power of Mine-a's scepter but it didn't work on the Kalasag. Even the Kabilan couldn't dent the mystical armor. Ybrahim slashed and stabbed Hagorn's back and almost killed him. However, Asval interfered and helped Hagorn to escape.

During the second to the last war of Encantadia, in the Battle of Adamya, Hagorn was killed by Amihan.
In Book 3, Hagorn reappears as one of Ether's assistants against the Sang'gres and became Armea's kidnapper and Alena's slayer.
Hagorn dies a second time while in combat with his daughter Pirena. His original intention was to win her over and the Gem of Fire. He confidently derided Pirena's weakness by likening her to a fruit to his tree. (see analogy) Pirena, however, is determined in her course and declares that she no longer has a father. In the ensuing conflict, where at one point the Fire Gem (held by Pirena) and the Water Gem clashed, Hagorn emerged as would-be victor, before turning on himself.

The complex personality of the Hathorian King can be clearly seen through snitches of kindness throughout Books 1-3. Hagorn, when young, helped the Sang'gres when they returned to Etheria and were being chased by Etherian soldiers. At the last moment before his first death, he concedes to telling the truth about his being a father to Pirena. Though victorious countless times in Book 3, there were many instances when Hagorn was seen slumped and somber.

Eventually, he finds redemption at the point when he crawls to a position where he could strike his daughter dead. Telling her that he would never be killed again (while at the same note telling her that he would never bring her pain), he staggered away from her and stabbed himself. Reconciliation is poignant, but brief, as Pirena rushes to her father's side and screams "AMA!" (Filipino for Father). Hagorn leaves parting words, to the effect that he admires everything his daughter ever stood for, and how empty his cause had been.
Hagorn held two Gems at separate occasions: In Book 1 he took the Gem of Fire at the same time that Lira was trying to save her aunt. He later handed it back during his duel with Amihan and Pirena. In Book 3 he had the Gem of Water after Alena gave it up for the bastard son of her husband, Ybarro. He handed it back as he lay dying in Pirena's arms.

This was the culmination of a weaving complex relationship between him and her daughter, at one time including Pirena's daughter, Mira.

The first verse of Alena's song is sung at the close of the final scene.

Encantadian equivalent of Greek God Zeus, the Diwatas refer to him as Bathala; the Supreme God of the Encantandians, and brother to Arde. His likeness is represented by the many statues scattered around the palaces of Lireo and Sapiro. One of his statues became alive when he gave the Jewel of the Elements to Cassiopea during the war.
Emre, before being a Bathala, was executed from the heavens together with his brother Arde and Bathalumang Ether. He became the chosen leader of Encantadia after long observation between the three descended beings. He is also the one who cursed Arde to become a ferocious dragon for many beings, the Encantados preferably, to reject him, and Ether to become a helpless Snake for her to be unable to return to the land of new beings, Encntadia, because she have to crawl on her belly to reach it.

Emre is also the cause of Encantadia's separation and classification. After some time, Ether demonstrated her powers to the Encantados and made her worship her due to fear. These Encantados became the first Etherians, and established Encantadia's first kingdom, Etheria Arde, on the other hand, became the guardian of Limbo, the "gates" of Devas.

She made a condition to Mira that, to set her free, she must give her the spirit of her heart, because, earlier, Mira cried and Lavanea tasted her tear, which was full of sadness. Mira agreed, even if she tried to escaped. Lavanea got her spirit's heart and, when Hagorn appeared, she presented Mira to him, now ruthless, without feelings. Jewels and Spirit-Guides
The jewels (brilyante) and spirit-guides (gabay-diwa) play a normally overseen yet important role to the world of Encantadia. These are fictional items and characters that diversify plot of this show. They give the Sang'gres powers and support in times of need respectively. The jewel used to be one big diamond called the Jewel of Elements, which was used by Bartimus, Meno, Cassiopea and Aegen to defeat the empire of Etheria. The jewel was then split into four by Cassiopea due to Hathoria's plot to steal it. The four were then distributed to Sapiro (Earth), Lireo (Air), Adamya (Water) and Hathoria (Fire). The Hathors stole the Water Jewel but it was later recovered by Armeo together with the Fire Jewel. Before Armeo died, he entrusted to Raquim the Earth, Water and Fire Jewels so he can give it to Mine-a, holder of the Air Jewel. Mine-a in turn entrusted them to her four daughters: Pirena (fire), Amihan (air), Alena (water) and Danaya (earth). The four jewels travelled to and fro these Sang'gres. At the ending, it is Armea, Alena's daughter who inherits the water jewel due to Alena's death. Amihan, Danaya and Pirena keep their jewels at the ending. Each jewel has one spirit-guide who continues to give it power. Amihan and Lira however have special spirit guides called twin-guides (kambal-diwa) who help and guide them.

Criticisms

Some people suggested that Encantadia is influenced by J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings in some aspects like Lireo refers to Lórien and Hathoria refers to Mordor. Although some people argue that just as Tolkien's work was derived from other myths such as the Norse mythology (the armor worn by the sang'gres are inspired by the Valkyries in Viking Mythology), Encantadia derives some of its fictional characters from Philippine mythological entities (like Bathala and the Diwata) Some aspects of inspiration from anime can also be seen, like the name Sapiro is very much like the name of a place in Magic Knight Rayearth, Cephiro. The striking resemblance of the Sang'gres to the main protagonists of the anime can also be keenly noted.

Encantadia influences

This article aims to list all possible sources of inspiration for elements of the "Encantadia universe", featured in the show Encantadia and its sequel series.

Concepts

  • Bathala
  • Diwatas and encantados

Names and the Enchanta language

  • "Abog" is a Filipino word for sudden.
  • "Adamya" may have been derived from Adam.
  • "Adarde" may have been derived from the Filipino word adarga which means an armor made of skin.
  • "Agimat" is the Filipino term for talisman.
  • "Alena" could derive from Elena, and ultimately from Helen, the most famous bearer of that name being Helen of Troy. However, another Helen is probably more relevant to Filipino culture: St. Helena of Constantinople, the mother of the Roman Emperor Constantine I. According to legend and/or tradition, she and her son recovered the True Cross of Jesus in the Holy Land; that event is commemorated in the folk Catholic practice of the Santacruzan (literally "Holy Cross"), still practiced today in the Philippines. In it, mother and son are immortalized as Reyna Elena (Queen Helena) and Constantino respectively.
  • "Alipato" is a Filipino word for ashes being carried by the wind from a fire.
  • "Andora" could derive from Pandora from Greek mythology; it could also come from Andúril, the name of a sword found in J. R. R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings. It may also derive from Andorra, a country between France and Spain.
  • "Aquil" could come from aquila, Latin for eagle. Its sound may have come from dakila which is the Tagalog word for great as he is described.
  • "Amihan" is the Filipino term for the northeast monsoon.
  • "Arde" could come from Arda, J. R. R. Tolkien's name for our Earth. It could also come from an Arabic term for "earth" - arde.
  • "Avatar", the name of a powerful enchanted sword, is borrowed from Hinduism.
  • "Avilan" and "Avila" could either come from Avalon, resting place of King Arthur, or St. Teresa of Avila.
  • "Camlon" could come from Camlann, the place where King Arthur is mortally wounded, or Camelot, his castle.
  • "Cassandra" was the prophetess of Troy whom nobody believed, because of a curse from Apollo.
  • "Cassiopea", properly spelled Cassiopeia, was the mother of Andromeda, a maiden Perseus rescued; also, the name of a constellation representing her.
  • "corra" (heart) could be derived from the French cœur (as in Richard Cœur de Lion, "Richard the Lionhearted").
  • "Danaya" could be a play on Diana, which is the name of a Roman goddess (her Greek equivalent is Artemis), as well as the late Princess of Wales (the character Danaya is also a princess), and the actress portraying her.
  • "Devas" maybe inspired from Daevas ("heavenly ones"), a religious concept from Zoroastrianism, very fitting because Emre, an Encantadian deity, resides at Devas.
  • "Emre" could come from from the Welsh Emrys, (in Latin, Ambrosius), one of the names of Merlin (Myrddin Emrys, "Merlin Ambrosius") Or from the hungarian king Imre, also known as Emeric or the Hungarian statesman Imre Nagy.
  • "Etheria" could be derived from the word ethereal, itself coming from ether. As an aside, the 1980s cartoon series She-Ra featured a planet of the same name (She-Ra is the brother of He-Man). The word might also have originated from an old codex entitled "Journey to Etheria" which was made by a Christian pilgrim somewhere in Israel.
  • "Hagorn" could be derived from Aragorn, one of the heroes of J. R. R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings, or Edward Hagedorn, Philippine politician.
  • "Hathoria" could be derived from Hathor, Egyptian cow-goddess of fertility.
  • "Hera"and its related terms which connote nobility could come from Hera, queen of the gods in Greek mythology.
  • "Hitano" could come from Kitano, the family name of Takeshi Kitano, Japanese actor and director; also the creator and host of the cult game show Takeshi's Castle, which was shown in the Philippines in the late 1980s.
  • "Kabilan", the name of another enchanted sword, could be taken from Caliburn, the sword of King Arthur, better known as Excalibur.
  • "Kahlil" could come from the poet and philosopher Khalil Gibran.
  • "Lira" could come from lira, the Tagalog word for lyre.
  • "Lireo" could be derived from Lir or Llyr, Celtic god of the sea, or Shakespeare's King Lear, who was based on Leir of Britain, or even King Linceo (Haring Linceo), a character from the Philippine epic, Ang Ibong Adarna (The Adarna Bird).
  • "Mayumi" is the Filipino term for pretty.
  • "Mercurio" is Spanish for Mercury, the Roman version of Hermes, the Greek messenger god.
  • "Mira" is a Tagalog word for myrrh.

  • Paklong could have come from the Filipino word for grasshopper, tipaklong.
  • "Pirena" could come from sirena, the Filipino term for mermaids, though the term itself is derived from the Sirens, which were identified with mermaids in the post-classical period. It may also come from the Greek word "pyros", which means fire (pyros is present in words related to fire - such as pyromania, pyrotechnic, and pyre). It could also be derived for pirana which is the Tagalog for piranha.
  • "Sang'gre" (royalty) could come from the Spanish word sangre, which means blood, and from the Old French Sangreal or San Graal, the Holy Grail. For the Grail's purported connection to royalty, see Holy Blood, Holy Grail.
